There's news stories everywhere and I'm obsessed. I mean, are these people crazy? Are they humanitarians? Is this going to work? Should a non-profit be going this? So many questions!

One of the finalists is from Austin. She was on the radio the other morning and I was like WTF? She was also married and had 2 step children. She said her husband and family understood her need to go and fully supported her. I really don't see how this could work. They asked if she would be able to stay in contact with her family and she said there would be a delay, but that video and texting would be possible. So I guess Mars has wifi.
But did people think the first moon mission was crazy, too?
Yeah, I remember Buzz Aldrin or someone else saying that they all thought that it was more likely than not that they would not be able to return. They thought the landing would be successful, but that taking off and being able to come back to Earth was a long-shot.
The Mars thing is kind of wild because it's like you are definitely never, ever coming back. That finality is so mind-bending for me.

This is a crazy story. I don't know much but one of the news shows last night said that of they ever do go, the chances of surviving long term is slim. They estimated that the people wouldn't live for more than 68 days. Death would likely be caused by starvation or poison from the atmosphere.

This is my H's big problem, that it's being run by a nonprofit. He went on a crazy rant last night which ended with, "Good! If you want a nonprofit to send you to Mars and never come back, have a great time!"
I'm just confused about how they will feed themselves. They will bring a supply of food, I'm sure, but that will only last so long. How are they going to continue to get food? Do things grow there? Is earth going to send them food?

I need to talk to my husband, the rocket scientist about this. Basically assuming this gets off the ground at all, you're going to have people stuck in a space ship for 9 months (my understanding is the Hohmann transfer is the fastest time between the Earth and Mars and that's how long it would take) on a rocket that may or may not land successfully, on a planet that cannot sustain human life without life support. Great idea. I need to read about this, are the people competing to go scientists/doctors? or just average shmoes?

Cherhorowitz If they don't time it with the Hohmann Transfer then yes it could legitimately take years to get there since this is an alignment that doesn't happen like every couple of months or so. My husband worked on the Atlas mission that sent the curiosity rover to Mars which is why I need to pick his brain. (He's on the team that launched the rocket- USAF engineer. Not JPL who designed and created the rover to be clear.)

I don't understand why they took one spouse and not the other. I have seen a lot of stories like that. If you're trying to colonize, wouldn't you want them to procreate?

Apparently each person or pair of people will be trained to specialize in certain areas...ship repair, food management, shelter creation...but with more scientific terms. The chick from here spoke as if it all made complete sense and it was just going to be super easy to start a colony out there. This initial 24 have nothing to do with breeding though. She made a point to let those know on the selection crew that she had no interest in breeding. Apparently, this first set of 24 is just to get things going, not to populate it. Others will be shipped in for that at a later date when the colony is more functional.

Dudes seriously need to read the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson before going to Mars. Haha. This seems like a stunt more than genuine scientific endeavor.

So... what does happen when someone gets KU in space??? LOL. Please, imagine this with me. You'd be like "HOUSTON, SEND ME ALL THE DIAPERS AND AN ANYWHERE CHAIR"

Here is the Texas Monthly story by the husband of the Austin woman. If anyone is interested in reading it. Although, he does make it sound like some celebrity will be involved. Not an actual celebrity, I mean like notoriety. I mean he's talking about endorsement deals and his picture being on TMZ...uh, that probably won't happen guy, sorry.
