The boy has the kids Kindle Fire for his upcoming plane rides. He's a little too young for it, but it's awesome! It hooks up to your Amazon account, you set the perimeters and there are tons of free tv shows, games and books you can download. We've never spent a dollar on any downloads.
I second the kindle fire. My nieces and nephew have one. My sister sets a time limit and it locks so they can't play after their allotted time. My other niece has a Nabi but I think my other sister just lets her play with it whenever and for however long she wants.
ETA: I don't know about the nabi's parental control settings.
I like the guided access setting on the iPad ( although not much help bc your H doesn't like apple). Basically, it freezes the app or video you're on and allows the child to just manipulate that app. Or just watch the video without clicking off of it.
We got ours kids kindles for Christmas. They have a 2 year replacement guarantee for any reason if they damage them. They came with one free year of apps that are age appropriate. We love them.

If you have a best buy nearby, I recommend checking them out. They have a great tablets section and within that, they have a kids tablet section. Some are pricey, others are basically throw away tablets. It really is going to depend on precisely what you're looking for in av tablet. so this is basically a no help post from me!
Cherhorowitz we looked into the kindle as well. Have you tried to use any of the parent settings yet? I read that they aren't as comprehensive as the nabi.
My kid isn't big on it, so we just locked it with a password so he can't use it whenever he wants or buy anything, but nothing else.
Just my two cents, but I would buy one that could grow with her. The Nabi is rather limited in it's use if I'm correct? Since YH is anti-apple, I'd personally go with the Kindle Fire. But I've had limited exposure to other options, especially kid-friendly ones.

We thought about this too but figure that it will 1. Take lots of abuse and possibly need to be replaced anyway or 2. When she outgrows it Luke can use it and we will get her something else.
I do like the kindle but read that its hard to separate what I have on my kindle from hers if we link the account. She really shouldn't have access to what's on my kindle.
You could always make a new account with a different email and put that on her kindle.

I could. Can you have two accounts with amazon though? Like with my name ? (This may be a stupid question) I obviously don't want to put it in her name.
Yes, you can have two under your name with different emails.

What about a leapfrog pad? That way you don't have to parental controls. Plus they have learning games. We got one for c and he loved it, plus we let him play with our iPad sometimes.

I would do a refurb Kindle Fire (if you want a tablet solely for LO's use) or a Nexus10 (if you want something the whole family can use but it'll have awesome parent controls) with a really strong case, like a Shockdrop or a Bobj.
Skip the kid tablets; they're mostly a marketing gimmick. Nabi's are ok but for $200+ you can get a brand new Kindle Fire and load it with whatever parental control apps off the PlayStore you want.
