Sometimes babies really are too big to come on their own and you end up with a c-section. But the sweet, snugly baby is totally worth all the waiting and work for a failed induction. Had my 41 week appointment on 2/12, baby was still only 60% engaged, I was barely dialated, and NST looked good. Natural induction techniques failed. I spent the night of 2/13 in the hospital starting the first round of prostaglandin gel and walking the halls for 2 hours, followed by squats to try to open things up and get baby to further engage. Checked in the morning and while my cervix was softer, no real progress. I did two more rounds of the prostaglandin gel with miles of walking, hours of ball bouncing, squats, lots of hopeful cramping, and no progress. My OB's goal was to get me dilated and effaced enough to break my water and get labor progressing, but baby never came down far enough to reach. She was willing to do the c-section the night of 2/14, but we agreed to do it the morning of 2/15 to give things another chance to progress overnight in case there was a sudden turn of events and for me to rest since it'd been a busy day of trying to evict baby. I was jealous of the other two women being induced at the same time as me when they got to move to onto the delivery suite and the woman admitted at midnight who was laboring and waiting to get to 4cm so she could go onto the delivery suites and get her epidural. I came to terms with the c-section and the crushing of my plans for an otherwise unmediated birth, since the ultimate goal was to deliver a healthy baby.
Still no progress overnight, so I ended up with an emergency c-section. Baby Boy Seamonster was surprisingly big at 10lbs, 11.45oz and even my OB was surprised since the growth scans had indicated he was in the 8-9lb range (we knew he was going to be long at 21-22cm). His size was so big that he just wasn't making any progress down and even if I'd gone another week, I would have likely ended up with a c-section. I know women vaginally birth babies bigger than him every day, but my body wasn't letting that happen. He's beautiful and a pretty quiet baby, and the c-section wasn't as bad I had anticipated. We did skin to skin as soon as I was sewed up and taken to recovery, and he latched with no issues. He loves DH and DH got to hold him as soon as the pediatrician checked him out. We got released yesterday and I was anxious to leave since I couldn't really go anywhere otherwise and there was no wireless. I was chomping at the bit to get discharged so we didn't miss our escape trajectory and have to spend 2 hours feeding LO to leave the hospital. Luckily there were plenty of private rooms available because I probably would've gone crazy in a room with 3-4 other ladies and their babies.
Recovery is going well. Stitches came out yesterday and I'm only on ibuprofen now and even then it's only 1 regular pill every 6 hours. I can't lift anything bigger than my baby and he's the only thing over 10 lbs I'm allowed to lift. Not being able to drive for 6 weeks was a surprise, so we'll see how things work when my mom comes out since DH isn't taking that week off from work and she and I were planning to take a daytrip with LO, and she'll be staying in a hotel.
