I love planning these!
So, for a few that I've done we've definitely done the vacation house rental. If you can get one with a pool or hot tub, it gives you something relaxing and low-key to do while you drink (just be careful mixing swimming and alcohol obviously). It's usually a heck of a lot cheaper than getting hotel rooms and it's more comfortable. Usually everyone still gets their own room and you can save a lot on food by cooking dinner together, etc.
Activities while at a rental:
-Have everyone bring their favorite bottle of wine (or beer if most people are beer drinkers) and do your own wine tasting. It can be a lot of fun and avoids the renting a party bus and spending money on vineyards-- although, if your people are into that, drunk-busing it to the wineries is definitely recommended as well.
-I always love the game where a week or two beforehand you send the groom a list of questions (what was our first date, what's his nickname for the bride, etc) and then use it to play a drinking game. Everyone answers and then you read the groom's answers out loud. For everyone you get wrong, you have to drink.
-Drinking board games are always fun
-We did a cooking class together for my sister
-Comedy club for one best friend
-Walking tour of the city based on different pirates (there's also ghost tours, etc)
-LOVE the painting party idea
If you're more into the bar-hopping thing:
-For one bachelorette I did we all bought the same t-shirt and then spent a few hours decorating them ourselves (I bought iron-on letters and decals, etc). Everyone had a great time and if your bride is into the matching entourage, it definitely works.
-Find a bar that can do a group activity, like a dancer or country line dancing, etc. Bar hopping is great in general, but giving it a little bit of structure helps those who don't know each other bond a bit before the drunken dancing
For one I did, the bride had a lot of girls from far away that couldn't make it. So I had each of them mail me a handwritten card with a few dollars in it. The card said something sweet and how they were there with the bride in spirit and then specified a drink/shot of their choice. I held onto the money and everytime we went somewhere new, I'd hand the bride the card, let her read it (and usually tear up) then buy the bride whatever drink the girl who couldn't make it specified. Then the bride got to keep all the cards afterwards. It was a huge hit.
Also-- this isn't really related, but the best bachelorettes I've been to were set up so that you had to pay in advance and one person (usually the MOH) took care of paying for everything. It made the weekend so much more relaxing for all the girls and then you're not left squabbling over who paid more, less, etc. Just a friendly tip, especially if you have some people in the bridal party who are less reliable...
I didn't mean for that to be a novel. Sorry!
