Question for any teachers or anyone who knows teachers. My husband and I are looking to move but looking for teaching jobs first. Anyone know of any boards in Canada where you don't have to sit on supply? + or - about the area you teach. I know in Ontario you have to sit on a supply for x amount of time. We used to teach in Fort Mac and REALLY do NOT want to go back, but I feel like we are running out of options. :/
My board is crying for supply's ad you move up decently quickly. We are in the Ottawa valley. What are your teachables?
It's my husband. He has a history degree but has spent the last 5 years teaching math, science and gym.
I was in a special needs classroom but as an EA
Okay, here you/he will get hired onto the "A" sub list immediately - especially as an experienced teacher. Supply list just opened up here.
Technically you spend a year on the supply list (but you would be getting steady 4 or 5 days/week work) and then get on the roster to start taking contracts. We are so short that I have no doubts he could land at least a part time or short-term contract his first year. (ex. I teach French got hired to the supply Dec 13, 1st full time six week contract at end of Jan until March break, supplied 2 weeks, 2nd half-time contract until the end of the year, had my choice of multiple full year full-time contracts this year but chose a permanent part-time position instead). Average time to a permanent position is anywhere from 3-6 years for a non French or Spec-Ed teacher but he'd at least more than likely be getting full year full time contracts during that time.
For yourself, we also have lots of opportunities for EAs/ECEs. I know our school is at the point of calling parents to come in to supply EA because there is such a need.
LMK if you want any more info! I know it's not ideal but I also know you'd like to stay nearish family.

Perfect!! Thanks so much for the info! He is applying all over Canada right now, so this is incredibly helpful!
@erin2021 As per H-rural Saskatchewan you don't sit on supply. Cities you may go on a sub list only because teaching jobs are higher in demand there and you have to get in.
*DD info*
ETA-I might delete this after I know you have seen it just for privacy reasons and we can PM later if you want.
tiffbot, you can go ahead and delete it. We haven't even looked at Saskatchewan yet, but were thinking of doing so in April/May. So no need to worry! I'll definitely PM you if we need more info. Thank you!
Sounds good, and good luck in your search! If you do end up looking here, I know April/May is a good time because that's when teachers contracts have to be renewed and when they know who's leaving where and need positions filled.
