Good morning ladies! Thought I would share Abbey's birth story as she nurses in bed this morning.
Sunday night, 2/8/15, had a lot of irregular contractions but nothing too serious. When I woke up to pee at 4:30 I stood up to wipe after I was finished and it was like I was still peeing. I was like "babe I think my water broke but I'm not sure." It was only about a cup of fluid. So I took a quick shower and we hopped in the car to L&D. I had more regular contractions in the car but they still weren't intense.
In triage they did a check and confirmed my water broke and checked me into delivery. It was about 8am at this point. While walking down the hallway my water continued to break...everywhere. So nasty! I still was only 1cm dilated so doctor started me on IV of pitocin. She also gave me an IV of penicillin since I am Strep B positive. Once my IVs were started DH went back to the car for our stuff and started making phone calls. I started to feel super weird - dizzy, sweaty, cold like I might pass out. I buzzed the nurse and she took my BP. It was 70/30. She immediately stopped the penicillin IV and I instantly felt better. Apparently I'm allergic to penicillin now. Fabulous! So they had to give me a different IV antibiotic which was fine.
Around 11am they inserted a bulb catheter to help dilate me more and get my cervix more ripened. That REALLY got the contractions going. DH and my mom helped me breathe through them and we watched Pocahontas on repeat all day (my comfort movie).
Around 1pm the doctor checked my cervix and I was at 4cm. She saw that my water still hadn't completely broken so she broke that. When she did, my uterus started contracting and wouldn't stop. This put Abigail under stress and her heart rate dropped. They flipped me over on all 4s, put an oxygen mask in me and gave me a muscle relaxant shot in my leg to get my uterus to relax. It finally did and Abigail's heart rate went back to normal. After this episode, Abs wouldn't tolerate me laying on my back without her heart rate dropping. I was on fetal monitoring the entire time after this and we would have to flip sides frequently to get her happy.
They continued my pitocin IV and contractions started to get VERY bad. I asked for epidural around 5pm and man that thing was magical. Doctor let me labor for a few more hours on the epidural and I was SO ready to get Abigail out. Doc finally came back in around 10pm and said I could push. This was seriously the easiest part for me. I pushed for 20 min and she came right out. I found myself holding my breath waiting to hear her cry. Once she did I just cried and cried. I never knew I could love someone so much.
I got away without episiotomy and only 2 stitches. I had excess fluid while pregnant so the amount of afterbirth was super intense. There were puddles on the floor. DH's shoes got ruined too. It seemed to take a long time to get me put back together and we were finally in recovery room by 12:30.
The next day, Radiologists and Surgeons did an ultrasound and Abigail's ovarian cysts look the same. They are going to wait a few weeks to see if the cysts shrink on their own now that she's outside of me (and not receiving so many hormones). We have an MRI scheduled this week. I sure hope they are getting smaller so surgery isn't necessary. The cysts don't seem to be affecting her at all right now.
The past 12 days have been the most rewarding, challenging, terrifying and amazing days of my life. I'm pretty sure I have full-on baby blues as I usually have one crying meltdown/day in the afternoon. I also have a UTI which is pretty shitty. Got meds Thursday afternoon and feeling almost completely normal today. I really can't wait for all the visitors to stop coming by so we can just have a normal routine. I guess that's the one downfall to having a huge family and friends group nearby - everyone has to meet her!
