Hi ladies- you were so helpful with my pumping question I figured I'd ask for your wisdom on spit up.
LO is 1 month old, EBF. We have a dr appt wednesday for a well visit and I plan to mention this to the doctor. I have a bit of an oversupply and very fast letdown that we are working through with some different positioning.
Lately during my middle of the night and am feeds especially, LO has been spitting up a lot more frequently and more in quantity. I know my supply is highest then so I was attributing it to that. He's also a gassy guy in general and is incredibly difficult to burp. I need your advice... Should I try pulling him off every few minutes to try a burp and try to prevent the big spit at the end of him finishing a side? He typically nurses one side only for about 8-15 minutes normally. I try to unlatch if I hear gulping but I don't ever feel letdown so it's hard for me to judge sometimes.
Also, how much spitup is "normal"? Is there something in my diet effecting him with gas and spit or can I attribute it to my supply right now? He just nursed for 11 minutes and burped after, spewing what he just ate (it was more spit than usual for him). If he switches sides and feels like doing dessert, I can guarantee he will spit because the boy likes to eat and doesn't quite know when it's quitting time...
Tl;dr - my kid spits a lot and I don't know if it's normal.

I do not know how much spit up is "normal", but as long as your LO is gaining weight it should be ok. Talk to your pediatrician and if he/she is happy with how your LO is growing then you should be good. As for burping, I can only tell you what worked for me. I would only burp my DD between sides occasionally (depending on how hungry she was and how frantically she would try to get to the other side) and after (every time). She has gone through phases where she never spits up then other days it seems like she can't keep anything in and we all have to change outfits multiple times because they don't make burp clothes big enough! Just keep nursing and check in with your pedi like planned. GL!
We are in the same boat. Our pediatrician isn't too concerned since he is not in pain, gaining weight, and healthy. I nurse only on one side per feed and that seems to help.
I am not sure what is "normal" but like PP, we have some days/feeds that we have no spit up and others where I am sure DD spits up everything she just took in. I also have over supply and an over active let down, but since LO is gaining well and otherwise happy my midwives are not overly concerned by this. They have recommended to me if DD falls asleep nursing to leave her and not burp for 30 min to allow her to digest first, and otherwise not to sit her up immediately after nursing unless I have to.
DS2 spits up a ton but doesnt seem like he has gas pains and is super hard to burp. I had an oversupply and an OALD. When he nurses hes done in about 5 mins (5 months old now), when he was younger it was 7-10 mins.
I tried to burp him between sides but he would have a huge freak out and the Dr said not to worry about burping between, that it may nake him swallow even more air.
Usually when I can get a good burp its when I'm rocking him back and fourth to put pressure on his belly.
As long as baby is gaining weight I wouldnt worry to much about it. Yeah it sucks and its gross, just wait till your walking out the door to change your shirt

I'm with everyone else about crazy quantities of spit up. DD is 5 months old now and it was ridiculous for a while but now she doesn't spit up very much at all. It has been replaced by drool though It may be reflux but as long as baby is gaining weight and doesn't seem in pain, most pedis wouldn't want to medicate. It's mainly a laundry issue for you.

This describes my LO perfectly! He's gaining weight nicely, so I guess I'm not too worried. I'll talk to my pedi on Wednesday! Thanks everyone!
DD was the spit-up queen. I've never seen a baby spit up as much as she did. My only advice would be to trust your gut. If LO is gaining well and doesn't seem uncomfortable or have other symptoms, then it's probably alright. Don't be afraid to tell your pedi if you have concerns.
I had OS and OALD and DD unfortunately just learned to be a bit of an over-eater. She wasn't happy after a feeding unless she was a bit over full, but then she had reflux and spit up constantly. She would spit up immediately after feedings, or 2 hrs after feedings, it didn't matter, but she seemed perfectly happy otherwise. The pedi also saw her do it and labeled her a "happy-spitter"... but long story short, after a few episodes of discolored spit-up we ended up on lanzoprosol for reflux. I also had a suspicion that dairy in my diet didn't help the situation, so I cut down on that as much as I could.
Around the 7-8 month point, that muscle that holds stomach contents down tightened up and we saw a dramatic decrease in volume. Until then, it was mostly just a really inconvenient laundry problem for us.
