We're going to a beach for a week with the toddler and the May baby at the end of April. I'm trying to figure out what all I need to get for the kiddos In terms of swim / sun gear to best protect them.
I have a little tent for the beach. Works good if your little one will play in it. And I got the non disposable swim diapers, target had a few during the summer, and I like the pottery barn hooded towels.

I got DS the long sleeve rash guard, swim shorts, flip flops (they're just cute, offer no protection), & he's got a beach hat. The glasses lasted 2.5 seconds before they were trash.

I can't see how old your toddler is, but I can tell you what we will be doing when we go in June.
For my toddler, he will just be in swim trunks with lots of sunscreen and probably some water shoes. We are going to be across the street from the beach so I need him to walk. It will help keep his feet from getting hot on the sand and then preventing stepping on shells where it might hurt him. But he's old enough now that sunscreen does what we need with just his trunks.
As for the baby, who will be 13 months when we go, he will be wearing swim trunks, a rashguard (prob short sleeve) and I will bring hats but I don't know if he will keep them on. If he is walking by that point, I will also get him water shoes.
We have this half tent thing we bring also so that the boys can be total shade if/when they need it. We kept LO under that basically the entire time last summer, but he was only 8 weeks old.
I love puddle jumpers as far as flotation devices -you should look into those. They have the arms but also a chest piece and they buckle in the back. Super easy to use.
We also have just a basic inner tube with the shade over it for the little one that we will use. Those are always just nice to have.
I have heard good things about puddle jumpers from moms' of older kids. Just looked it up they are for 30-50lb kids so not sure how many of our LO's will be able to fit them this summer. We have a spring float similar to this one that I used last summer a couple of times and intend to use again this year. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00JE6XABM/ref=pd_aw_sim_t_1?refRID=1TX29TC5PJPGNNFSH6AF

I get all of my boys' swimwear from Gymboree. The rash guard tops are UPF 50. I was just looking and they don't have anything super cute out yet though. Usually their swim stuff is adorable.

My toddler does great with his Puddle Jumper. He started using it last summer when he 1 turning 2. I put him in a long sleeve rash guard and trunks. If we went to the beach I'd probably get water shoes too.
Baby will just be in long sleeve rash guard and shorts and a hat with lots of sunscreen.
I know I'm being silly, but....I really want to get E a bathing suit and not a rash guard to wear at the beach. I will lather her up with baby sunscreen - is that fine to do or do we need to get rash guards? Headed to Myrtle Beach next month to visit my mom and we plan on taking her to the beach in the morning and taking an umbrella or pop-up tent. I really want to get this for E.
MIL gave us SIL old baby swim suit. It's like a bikini. DD won't be wearing it.
Grandma also gave us a swim suit for DD. It's a 24 months. Maybe next year grandma. I'm looking at getting a rash guard and hunting swap sites for swim condition pocket diapers. Should be cheaper for her in the long run.
I would do a swimsuit for the cute pictures and then a rash guard. Even with sunscreen, the sun is just so harsh on their skin and they will be playing and it's hard to get all the sand off to reapply often enough. Put the sunscreen on naked before the suit though because my neice has had some burns right around her bathing suit area from the sand rubbing off the sunscreen.
You can also take a small kiddie pool with you (easier if your staying right on the beach) and fill it up with some water so baby can play in it and stay cool. Especially good if the water is too rough for you to take LO in.
Great ideas haykay13. My mom lives about 10 minutes from the beach so I don't know if it would be worth it. I've also seen people with plastic laundry baskets (no holes). I have a feeling that DD may be walking by then or damn close so I'm wondering how this will go down - don't some babies have severe aversion to sand? We took E when she was 9 weeks old but she literally just sat in my lap in the shade except for dipping her toes.
Our tent was similar to @jcrewgirls. It came with spikes, which was good because the wind on the beach would blow it right over. I saw some cool umbrella thing people had though.
