Peanut Allergies and possible prevention

when does it say to start? I started my daughter at 1 year and she is allergic. No excema (sp?) - no allergies anywhere else in the family.... So I unfortunately would be hard pressed to believe it

I have done a ton of research and due to having a family full of celiacs which works a little different I tend to agree with exposing kids early.

Having allergies myself I know there is a major genetic component to allergies and also the way the immune system is presented with different foods at different times.

jbdamonm. According to the study, exposure should start between 4-11 months. Unfortunately no treatment is 100% effective, so the fact that your DD has a PA despite exposure at one year does not negate the findings.

Very interesting. DD is 16 months old and I haven't exposed her yet. Peanut allergies scare the hell out of me!

I couldn't find the article, but my pedi recommends exposing LOs to peanuts at six months. She suggested to give DS a pea-sized amount of peanut butter three nights in a row. Of course, she said have infant benedryl on hand and call immediately if he had a reaction. But, she did say that research has shown that waiting can actually cause more harm than good.

However, to luvboston's point, genetics also play a big role. DS has a tree nut allergy - so does my sister. I'm not sure if any length of waiting or not waiting would change that.

I think this is great news for preventing allergies. I gave both of my boys pb around 9 months. Allergies don't run in my family though, so I wasn't overly concerned about it.

We started with all foods except honey when we started solids. No allergies here, thankfully.

There are also other components to the hygiene hypothesis which are plausible which aren't accounted for by simple early exposure.

This is what our pedi suggested and what we did, mixed it in the cereal we gave her. We don't have any family history of an issue but our bug doesn't appear to be allergic.

The guy who runs (randomly, of all things) an organic blueberry and raspberry picking farm near us has a PhD in allergy science (or whatever the fancy term is called) and we had an interesting conversation about it while we were there last summer. I told him I felt like every other article went pro or anti early exposure, and that I could see the science being pretty convincing on either side. He said that most people in academia are split 50/50 because there is so much good research on both sides of the argument!

There was another article floating around Google News yesterday that said they found doing dishes by hand could keep the allergies down - because the dishes don't get quite as clean as when the dishwasher sanitizes them, so our exposure builds up over time.

I haven't given DH peanuts on purpose yet, but I ate PB while I was nursing and we have it around all the time, and he had candy contaminated by peanuts even if he didn't actually eat the Snickers. I felt like that was a happy medium for now.

I believe that toxiic pesticides and GMOs are a big component in food allergies. Thank you Monsanto.

I'm not sure exactly what the health effects of eating Round Up laden food is, but I don't think it is good. I try to do organic foods as much as possible for that reason.

I read this article too and found it very interesting! I am going to talk to DSs doctor when we got for his 6 month appointment.
