I've heard these claims before. My MIL used to work for a vet who had a low opinion of both Purina and Pedigree so we moved away from using it. It's sad they don't put a little more care into what is marketed to pets.

Yikes. We do Purina One with both our dog and cat because it was the only grocery store brand I could find that didn't have fillers as primary ingredient. Any recommendations for other brands?

Ergh. I've used those in a pinch when I couldn't get to Petsmart for the week. Now I feel bad. Never again.

I would stay away from all pet food that you can buy at the grocery store or walmart. A couple of my dogs have problems - one has a liver problem and one has a kidney problem so I put them back onto a RAW food diet. (I had them on it years ago but then switched to a grain free kibble). Also put our youngest dog on it as well. I switched them a year ago and the change in all of them is remarkable. Their skin/coats are gorgeous, they have energy, their poop is smaller. My one dog with the kidney problems showed his levels are back to normal in his last blood test, and the one with the super high liver enzymes showed her enzyme level went down drastically as well. It's a more expensive food but worth it to me to keep my pups healthier

We used to use purina and my dog would have these weird seizures! We switched food to a more expensive brand bought at the vet clinic and he never had a seizure again!!

We switched from Eukanuba to Nature's Variety Prairie 2-3 years ago. While Arthur was still with us it seemed to be a good fit--he had occasional digestive issues.

The biggest hassle with it is only available at Petco not Petsmart so I have to keep my eye out for store coupons/sales and make an extra trip--Merlin gets groomed at Petsmart.

I go to a store called Page's Healthy Paws - there's one on Rt 12 in Wauconda and another on 176 in Island Lake. It is full of healthy pet products - it's amazing!!! It's locally owned and the owner and her staff are super knowledgable on everything there so I highly recommend going there. It's worth the trip and it's not that far away. 

I have tried several of the raw diets they carry there - and I usually alternate between chicken, chicken/salmon, and beef to give them variety. 

They also have the best prices on antler chewies - which last for a super long time and they are safe for pups. Great for their teeth too. Unlike rawhide which can break off in pieces and get stuck in the intestines (google it - many many dogs have died from problems with rawhide chewies).

For my 2 dogs with the kidney and liver issues, I order another RAW diet online from a company called Darwin's. It's specialized to help with their individual issues and it's organic and really expensive but since it has proven to be helping them, I keep ordering it. It's a prescription diet so our vet had to call it in to them. She said they should eat that one 4-5 days a week and then they can eat the same one our other dog eats (from Page's) the other days.

We found a Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul that I think was a good brand meow84. Although I know we could only find it in a Petsmart or local Pet store like that.

We do Natural Balance limited ingredient diet for our dog and it's worked well. We found he has skin issues when the protein is chicken, so we alternate between bison and salmon as the protein. For our cats we use Taste of the Wild for dry food and Weruva Cats in the Kitchen for wet food with no issue.

The best thing I ever did was sign up for auto-ship for my pet food--places like Pet Food DIrect and Chewy.com carry all the high end, grain free brands, and you just set up an autoship and it appears at your door. I haven't been to a pet store in years.
