I think I've read too much about it and now I'm confused.
DS will be 1 month on Saturday. I've only noticed milk residue on his tongue and no other white patches. But I'm getting pains in both breasts usually right after or between feedings. They started out as minor twinges, but now it's a shooting pain either behind my nipple or deep in the tissue.
one of the hallmarks of thrush is shooting pains in your breasts (not necessarily when you're actively nursing), but your nipples can get sore as well. you can certainly treat at home and see if your symptoms improve. if it gets worse instead of better, i'd call your doctor. if you do start to notice white patches in your LO's mouth, call your pedi for a prescription for an antifungal oral rinse.
for treating at home- -wash your laundry (particularly bras) with a cupful of vinegar in the load to kill yeast -you can apply a diluted vinegar solution directly to your nipples before/after feedings, or use an over-the-counter antifungal cream (look for miconazole- you can often find it in a tube generally marketed as a jock itch treatment) -take baths with a cupful of vinegar added -try to cut sugar out of your diet, and eat lots of probiotic/fermented foods (yogurt, etc.) -take a probiotic supplement

I'm getting the same pains and I have sore nipples. Mainly my right nipple.... But no white patches in little ones mouth. So I'm confused as to what is going on.
I was convinced I had thrush early on too. I would have random shooting pains in my boobs that would come after feeding and in between feedings. Sometimes they'd be so bad that I couldn't sleep, or it would wake me up. However, after meeting with a LC, she said I was having "refilling pains", where my breast tissue and milk ducts were just adjusting to now producing milk (I was a FTM too).
The pains gradually went away on their own. I didn't do any treatments or nipple creams.
Since I've never actually had thrush, I can't say whether the pain is comparable. But I think I've seen it mentioned that along with thrush comes shooting pain from the nipple back into the breast during feeding.
In the end, if you have concerns, get it checked out by your LC/pedi/OB.
You will know thrush on your LO. Looks like little white pimples all over their mouth. You can totally get shooting pains in your breast, from nursing in general (not to say you shouldn't be aware of symptoms), I get them and I almost 6 months in. Keep an eye out for itching, shiny or flakey nipples or intense pain.
My son had a white coating on his tongue due to having a tongue tie. The dr said because his tongue wasn't reaching the roof of his mouth he had the residue. A tongue tie could also be causing pain in between feedings- this was the case for me. May be worth looking into! Good luck!
Thanks ladies I'm definitely going to bring it up at LOs appointment next week. I'm the first one in my family to successfully BF so yall are my only advice.

@kobyet What do they do about tongue tie? My LO has a white coating on his tongue most Of the time too? Is it something that could/should be corrected?
We had it cut using a laser. It mainly is diagnosed because it affects latch causing bf pain, however from my research taking care of a tie can benefit the baby in so many ways in the future- ear infections, orthodontia, and speech- it's a long list.

It is possible for you to have/have symptoms of thrush, without symptoms in baby. You are usually both treated simultaneously to make sure it is completely eradicated because it's a tricky bugger that likes to keep coming back.
Sparkly No, but my breasts do itch. Although thats probably just dry skin The pain in my breasts has decreased and I've noticed an increase in my supply...maybe it's all connected?

Red, shiny and itchy or painful nipples are a hallmark of thrush. Without that, especially if the pain has subsided I would say you're probably fine. Certainly put a call into your OB if you have any concerns. I always recommend probiotics anyway, which ultimately cleared thrush for me, because they're great for your health in general.

DD had a milk coated tongue for probably the first month. It doesn't always have to be from tongue-tie. She was checked for one due to latch issues at the beginning. I'm not saying, don't ask about it, but don't get too worried
