The things that meant the most to me were: Custom onesies my friends made All the handmade baby blankets Lo's library- we did books instead of cards and people wrote such sweet things. A blanket one of my students gave me. It was hers, but when she found out we were doing Winnie the pooh in lo's nursery she told her mom she wanted to give me her blanket. Outfits my dad and brother picked out. All the handmade stuff- my mom sewed some blankets and my mil crocheted stuffed animal characters from Winnie the pooh
Thankfully we didn't get anything too odd or weird.
My MIL and SIL were drunk shopping and bought my LO a crocheted hat that looks like a shark eating her head. Waiting to receive the matching socks that look like sharks eating her legs. Also received (same people, also drunk shopping) a very elaborate turkey costume for Halloween/thanksgiving.
A few friends knit stuff for him. It's all lovely and I'll keep it as heirlooms. My bestie chose a beautiful picture book for him that fits his nursery theme and wrote a heartfelt card to him that I put in his baby book. My in-laws gave us a very generous gift to start up his 529 plan. They feel it's an important investment in his education. That was beyond awesome.
We didn't get anything too odd, but we did get some stuffed animal things that light up and play music. Those aren't our style and we'll pass them along to better homes.
My dad picking out baby stuff is pretty sweet so there's that. My mom got him his first piggy bank and it's a giant blue pig with polka dots. We have started putting money in it already. Odd gifts. Toys that he won't be able to play with until he's a year or 2 old. We will hold on to them but he needed a toy box before he was born! Anyway, it really is the thought that counts

My aunt made us an awesome quilt for DS1's nursery. I love it.
Strangest gift was the baby book my MIL got us. It's an Anne Geddes one so it has pictures of other babies throughout it. Not too weird, just not my style.

My grandma made lo a quilt out of the very last squares my great grandmother had made. It's beautiful. I almost burst into tears at the shower when I opened it. (My great grandma had made a quilt for every single one of her great grandkids).
I don't think we got any weird gifts. We did get a Carl Sagan book which is interesting coming from my family.

With DS, my amazing students knitted him a blanket. Each kid chose a different colour of yarn, and most learned how to knit just to make the quilt. It's one of my most treasured possessions.

We did the library card thing too. It was the best decision I could've made I can't wait to start reading his books to him!
We also had a lot of handmade blankets and our rock n play is awesome.

So far my two favorite gifts have been from my DH's brothers. One got us a huge set of Disney books (like 40). There are some super old ones and new ones so it's a great range. They are all the same size so it's a fantastic set. My other BIL got us a bunch of clothes but he also got LO a klompen piggy bank from holland (those wooden Dutch shoes). We all went as a family this summer so it meant a lot that he brought it back for her. He also filled it with euros for her first trip to Europe!
Edit: My husband's family is Dutch so it has some meaning

One of my very good friends sent us mail every week during pregnancy and it was the baby progress report with a little corresponding gift. It was awesome and I loved it. My parents gave us a gift certificate for a photographer to do either newborn pictures or family pictures. We've opted to wait for little one to be a little older and get new family pictures done.
