24 mo. are generally a bit wider to accommodate the baby-ish toddler body and diaper. 2T is slimmer and longer to accommodate the older child. I was confused by that until we got into 3T, so don't feel bad.
I have to admit I had no idea there was a difference between these sizes! I thought it was just a branding choice. I'll keep this stuff in mind since J is already wearing some 2T/24 months. Thanks ladies!

I thought the same thing until I read this! I do most of our everyday stuff at Target and I don't recall seeing 24M / just 2T

Bingo. My kid is short and pudgy and 24 mos. fits nice. I do have a couple of 2T outfits, but the pant legs are a lot longer than she needs and we have to roll them up.
I hope it's ok to ask this here, but if you are buying clothes for next winter what size are you getting?
I'm not buying clothes yet, but just going through hand-me-downs. I am buying 24m summer stuff while it was on clearance. DD is in 18m now and fits them well, but I suspect by summer she'll be outgrown and into 24m. I'm not buying further out until I figure out the 2T/3T sizing.
