My father passed away earlier this AM. I knew his death was imminent when I saw him two weeks. I still have a few patients to see before leaving work and I hope I'm able to put in my professional game face.
I hope this doesn't sound insensitive and callous but I cannot think of anything about our relationship that I'll miss. He refused to cultivate any relationship with my daughter strictly based on religion. He was so damaged by his alcoholic father and enabling mother that he was unable to be a loving, nurturing and caring father, husband and friend.
It's moot now but my father's stubborn refusal to seek medical attention for very troubling symptoms and his life time of smoking certainly accelerated his death. Yes, it is a patient's choice to undergo as little or as much treatment they desire, but his decision affected his entire family.
The wake and funeral will be over the weekend. I'm so glad my DH will be with me while DD will stay with FIL and SMIL.

I am so sorry for your loss. The loss of a father, no matter the type of relationship, is difficult, and I'm glad you have your husband by your husband. Take care of yourself.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Even imperfect parents play an important role in our lives. I'm glad your daughter will be happy and surrounded with love while you travel, I hope that makes things a little easier in this difficult time.

Thanks everyone. It is a difficult time, compounded by both the difficult relationship my father and I had and the fact that I'm still mourning all my IVF losses.
I look at today's posts where so many people are able to share happy times - birth and pregnancy announcements, heart melting newborn photos and other happy news and I feel that unfortunately I'm in the wrong place.because I have nothing positive to contribute.
