Non baby related: the neighborhood package thief

There is a package thief in the neighborhood! Packages have disappeared within an hour of delivery from front doors on my street. This thief apparently doesn't like books but would gladly take any gadgetry/electronic appliances. Took not 1, not 2, but 3 expensive appliance that we ordered from amazon.

Now onto the evidence we have against her/what we know:

1) The mailman confirmed he's seen this thief before and had followed her to her residence after witnessing her crime - called the cops but her parents didn't allow the cops in without a warrant. She lives a couple blocks away with her parents. She's in her twenties, allegedly have mental issues. 2) Neighbors have set up cameras and caught video footage of her helping herself to a package on a front door.
3) We got her face and her address from her neighbor who positive ID'ed her from the video footage.
4) The policeman who's been helping my neighbourhood's theft issues knows of her already. She was caught once before but the other couple didn't want to press charges.

I would press charges she needs to learn that there are consequences to her actions and maybe just maybe will get help with mental issues if she truly does have them.

And her parents are clearly not helping her with this.

Someone here got the master key to all the mailboxes in our subdivision and has been helping themselves to everything. No one knows who it is! Luckily they haven't gotten anything of ours yet but a lot of people have been hit. I'm all for pressing charges.

I know it's a pain in the @$$ but, she is probably not going to stop til charges are made against her and she faces consequences. Sucks for you to have to through that though. Her parents need to take responsibility for what they so-called raised.

It sucks to have someone like that in the neighborhood. I would seriously try and mess with her and put dog poop in a box or a note inside that says "look up and smile. You are on camera." Or other things to just annoy people that steal packages off doorsteps. Maybe if she gets pranked enough she will stop.

Oh wow that's such a bummer! Especially with the mental issues. With the video footage cops could get a warent?

It's sad and despicable that her parents wouldn't want her to get help.

There's nothing like a package thief to spoil the trustong atmosphere in a neighbourhood. I hope she gets called on it soon. Seems like there's enough evidence against her if everyone would just with together. This girl needs help and consequences!

I need more details. 
So she doesn't like books…does that mean she opens the packages before she takes them? Does she employee the shake method?

Are the items returned by the family members? Are the parents denying the problem?

I would start having items delivered to my place or work. Another thought would be to boobytrap a package. Maybe use a glue like substance so it sticks to their hands. 

We had this happen in our neighborhood and the teenage thief was caught (neighbor saw and chased him down). The police didn't do anything since he was under 18. Most of us now notify someone who works from home that a package is expected and keep a look out.

I don't know about the package delivery theft, but I'm pretty sure this is a federal crime/felony. The usps doesn't take well to people being in other peoples mailboxes.

I am in the press charges camp, especially if the parents won't help.

If you really want to mess with her/the parents look up what the dollar limit is for misdemeanor theft vs felony theft (I think felony theft is $400+ in my state) and order something over that limit. I am not sure if that dollar amount is per item or in totality. Pressing felony charges might get the parents attention.

Re: books. A neighbour had a book from amazon. The box was delivered but went missing. Later that day they found the book under some bushes a street over. The packaging was found on that same street. According to the mailman, he saw her grab packages from front steps on my street, put into her backpack, then opened the pasckage when she was no longer on our street. Someone else had something stolen and a neighbor another street over found an empty box in their trash can, brought it back to the rightful address. Goods were nowhere to be found.

The parents didn't let the cops go into their home when the mailman followed and called the cops on her. I guess we have no evidence the stolen goods were at the house.  We've been wondering how she/her family are selling the stuff. 

There are email notification service you can sign up for with these couriers. I always have someone at home these day, so I'm no longer worried about stolen packages. I get out to my front porch to retrieve my stuff as soon as they're dropped off. Some of my neighbors have asked me to retrieve their packages for safe keeping when they're not home. A pain in the butt for all of us.
