Disappointed in meeting. I'm seeing a family dr currently and wanted to VBAC. She referred me to an OB she works with, it sounded like I needed a consult or a few so when the time came I knew her. Turns out I have to switch care completely.
The only way it seems around this is to schedule a c with my family dr and this OB and then go into labor instead just to keep seeing my family dr the rest of the way.
I'm pretty attached to her and don't want to switch for quite a few reasons. But I really don't want another C unless necessary.
I'm assuming she can't do VBAC (or trial of labor as the OB kept reminding me it's only a trial and if successful then a VBAC) for liability reasons? I have to ask her. I can't even process this properly.
If I were a first timer and needed an urgent or emergency c they would call in the right people so why does it have to be different as a 2nd timer trying labor again?

I would do some research into the reasons why your doctors consider you to be a specifically risky TOL/VBAC. If they can't express that with clear reasoning instead of generalizations, I would express how unfair that is to you. Also, if you can find info on why you're a good candidate for TOL/VBAC, you might help them side with you. They might also be restricted by hospital policies or other reasons you're unaware of. GL!

The OB said I'm a good candidate for TOL so I'm thinking the family doc just isn't allowed/not Covered by the right liability insurance? I just want to be able to try and not have to switch providers.

That's frustrating! My family doc just discontinued ob care, and I really love her, so I was bummed to have to switch. I hope you figure something out!

Are you sure it's that she can't perform a VBAC or is it that she doesn't want to? In all honesty, I'd probably switch providers for this, but since you really don't want to do that, your best bet is to talk to your doctor and see if you can find out what her objections are to a VBAC and see if those are issues you can work around. Good luck!
I know the family physicians who deliver on my unit have to consult with an OB/need OB back up whenever a c/s needs to happen. I am sure it has to do with that. The FP can assist in surgery, but they are not the attending surgeon. Its sorta the same as if you had a CNM as your primary in that they still need OB backup. I wish they were more forthcoming with the specifics earlier in your pregnancy though so that you don't feel completely dumped on with this news so late in the game. I am sorry.
A family doctor is not a surgeon and thus can't perform a c-section if your TOL/VBAC doesn't work out. So it makes sense to transfer your care ahead of time. That way, everybody is ready and prepared. It's different than an emergency c-section that's unexpected by its very nature.
Without a doubt, I would find a VBAC friendly provider ASAP if that is what you really want. You've been pretty much informed that you won't get what you really want unless you switch. I think your family doc isn't comfortable with the risk or isn't skilled to handle your care. I loved my VBAC so very much and had to switch OB's to get someone who would agree to helping me achieve that goal as long as it was safe. He was amazingly supportive and it was the best decision ever.
