I am going to be shameless here.
I live in rural India, and our local hospital (where daughter 1 was born, and kid #2 will be) struggles - to the tune of "they didn't have hospital gowns until someone donated some used ones last year; you labour in your clothes". The OB/GYN there is trying to make sure every baby goes home with a little care package, which includes a sewn playsuit and a hat, among other things. I've been knitting or crocheting hats for awhile, as I can, but then I heard some new numbers from the doctor there when I went for my last checkup.
They're up to 60 babies/month, and are usually just squeaking by in terms of hats for the kidlets. Since most of the parents are village farmers, the hats may be *the* hats the kids get. Subsequently, I've been busting my butt to start getting hats for them, and today created a blog (babyhatsforlch.blogspot.com). If you're a knitter, crocheter or sewer and have some extra time and material... would you please do a hat or two, and ship them our way? There's an address in the US I'll give on request, or you can collect a bunch and ship directly to India.
They need 540 more hats to make it through December(!!), and I know that I and the handful of other knitters and crocheters up here can't do that ourselves. So I'm just sucking it up and shamelessly begging anyone who can or wants to, to please help. I would love to have the ob/gyn there drowning in hats by the end of the year. I am certain a lot of people already do these for a local hospital or charity important to them, but if you don't have a local donation point - maybe you'll do some for us out here? Or set one or two aside to come our way?
Is there anyone else out here with a near-and-dear charity of their own that likes/wants/needs knitted projects? Maybe we can work on various ones, periodically inundating hospitals or organizations (like the Red Scarf Project from Foster Care 2 Success - www.fc2success.org/programs/red-scarf-project-and-book-club/ )?
