TRU is having their trade in at the end of the month so I figure this is the perfect time to get a different car seat.
Currently using Evenflo sureride and I've grown to loathe it. I have such a hard time tightening her harness. One side gets super tight and the other loose. No matter what I do.
We have the Graco 4Ever seat in both cars. No complaints here but nothing to compare it to. I have heard Britax is the "safetest" but they are expensive.
We have the Graco MySize 65 and DH has one of it's clones the Size4Me. I do have a little issue tightening the straps, but have found an easy way to make sure they tighten evenly. Otherwise we love them, and they are reasonably priced.
You should check out Car Seats for the Littles on FB. You can give them your LO's stats, plus your budget and what car you drive and they will help guide you to the best seat for you and help w/ any problems or questions you might have.
Another popular seat that we considered is the Chicco Nextfit.

One isn't safer over another. All seats, regardless of price have to pass the same safety regulations. What you are paying for is more padding and easier installation.
You do have to watch with some Britax seats because they have a shorter shell and if you have a longer torso child they could outgrow it before they are ready for a booster seat.
ETA: I've ready nothing but great things about the 4Ever, and know many car seat techs do recommend it.

Any rec?
I have similar issues w/ my Graco, but what I would do is loosen it all the way when taking LO out of the seat then when it's time to put her back in I tighten it about 80% before connecting the chest clip and after I click the chest clip I readjust and give the final tightening tug.
We have the Maxi Cosi and love it. The only down side is that it is huge, so it can be a tight fit when rear facing in smaller cars, but we were able to fit it in my hubby's chevy cruz which is a compact car, so it can be done. The reason they are so big is because they are built like a tank and very safe. They are pricy but well worth it IMO for the safety and peace of mind. Plus they are comfey for LO, DD loves hers and DH is jealous of her personal drink holder ;-) We move it back and forth between cars a couple times a week, and it's pretty quick and simple to install. It can be rear facing up to 40 lbs and then forward facing up to 70 lbs.

We have two diono radians that we like a lot. I have the RXT model and hubby has the R120. They take up a lot of room when rear facing but otherwise are very narrow and you can fit 3 across in a vehicle if necessary. They are also steel reinforced. I think they go up to 100 or 120lbs in booster mode.

Do you use a Radian angle adjuster? They can help w/ front to back space.

Maxi Cosi are good seats, but you are not paying for extra safety. Every seat meets the same safety guidelines.
I think it is important that parents know that so if they can't afford the bells and whistles that they are getting a less safe seat.
I'm kind of a car seat freak, but I'm not a tech. Everything I've learn is from the CSFTL FB page and website. There is so much great information out there regarding car seats.
We have the Britax Roundabout. It was the car seat that DS cried the least in when we looking. DS does not like sitting in the car seat. He has window of 40 minutes before he starts to go crazy crying.
Just on the main page on FB and they will work w/ you. It moves fast, so bump it if you need to. Or if you're more comfortable you can PM one of the admins.

All seats do have to meet standard safety laws, but that doesn't mean that they are all identical. Many seats have added safety features above what is required by law. However, there are cheaper brands than maxi cosi that also have the added features. We also chose it for the comfort, ability to rear-face longer, ease of installing, as well as the added safety features. But I agree, you don't have to spend a ton to feel like your kid is as safe as possible.

My hubby did in his car and it's awesome! For some reason he hasn't installed mine yet but you just reminded me to remind him- so thank you

I'm glad I saw this. Currently, DS is in the Britax Marathon. I really do like it other than the fact that my car is tiny (2005 Mazda 3) and the car seat is big. I always have to push the seat in front of the car seat up all the way.
I do need to look up the max height and weight for it...DS is on the taller side, and I need to get a new seat anyways so that we have two.
I think I'll go post in the Car Seats For the Littles FB page because I need something that will work for DS' height, my 2005 Mazda 3, and DH's 2012 Ford F150.

We have two Chicco NextFits and a Graco Size4Me. I like the NextFits better, but if you are on a budget, it's not really much of a preference considering the price difference.
