We are 23 weeks today with my Twin girls. I was really thinking I wanted to try to do a VBAC. DD had to be A CS due to her Spina Bifida. I'm starting to think I'm crazy! I know recovery is supposed to be easier with a vaginal birth. That would make caring for my daughter easier. BUT knowing my luck I'll push one out only to have #2 flip and end up with a CS anyway.
Which leads me to my question. How far along were you when you had your twins and was it a scheduled CS or did you go naturally?
OR
How many weeks will you be if you have a CS scheduled? Or Docs game plan, rule of thumb?
My boys were born at 38 weeks 4 days via scheduled c/s. We were planning on vaginal delivery until my breech baby B jumped way ahead size wise, making the c/s a safer option. So my section was only scheduled a week in advance.
If my first delivery had been a c/s, I would not have attempted a VBAC, for all of the reasons mentioned in the VBAC thread a few posts down.
I was scheduled for a C-section at 38w4d - my OB schedules them for after the 38 week mark - I wanted my regular OB to deliver me and 38w4d was the day she was on OR duty. Both of my girls were breech. (They both went breech in the late 20s and never turned again.)
I wound up having them (via C-section) at 38 weeks (well, 2 hours shy of 38 weeks) due to the beginnings of preeclampsia. I had my second choice OB deliver the babies, which I was happy about - there was one OB who I did not want at all costs.
Mine were born at 34w via emergency c/s under general anesthesia due to baby a's prolapsed cord. He was breech from 19w+ and smaller, so I knew a c/s was likely.
My end date was sometime between 38-39w, which was then pushed to 37w w a pre-e dx at 32w. My singleton was born at 37w1d, so going early was a possibility but I didn't expect 34w.
I don't know I feel about VBAC w twins - I haven't done any research but I can't imagine it's common. I really wanted a vag delovery, so I get that, but everything would really have to line up for me to consider it.
I had a scheduled c-section at 37w6 days. That was the closest surgery date my ob had to 38 weeks. We probably scheduled it around 30 weeks. I really wanted a vbac with #3 but he was stubborn as heck and my ob doesn't induce vbacs. I would not choose a vbac with twins for the reasons listed in the other thread.
I was worried about caring for the twins and recovery from my rcs when I had #3 but my recovery the second time was a lot easier than the first for some reason and wasn't an issue at all.
I had a scheduled C-section at 37w1d for my di/di girls. That was the date my OB had surgery, and he wanted them out by 38 weeks. My C-section was elective. I had two med-free vaginal deliveries with my previous kiddos, and was a good candidate for another vaginal delivery. However, I struggle with some anxiety and just had a lot of unrest about the high potential of a twin birth turning into an Emergency C or double whammy at the last minute. I know a vaginal birth would have been best case scenario, but with knowing I had to parent four kids when I got home, I decided recovering for a planned C would be more manageable/predictable than recovering for an emergency one or recovering two ways. It was very much a personal decision, and my DH and OB supported it. It went beautifully, and I don't regret it at all.
I was 35 weeks, my water broke, both were born vaginally. To help avoid the "1 comes out, then the other flips" scenario, my OB actually pushed on my stomach and kind of forced baby B down and out so that she couldn't flip once she had more room. There's only 5 minutes between them!
Scheduled rcs at 38 & 2. I would only have considered a vbac if babies were both in position and if my body was progressing. Neither of those things happened.
Thanks for the input ladies! I have time to decide if I'm crazy or not. Still kinda torn. Our hitchiker was a surprise so this will most likely be our last pregnancy. Kinda wanna say I did it (naturally with meds) and have a quicker recovery with the risk of a whammy. Part of me says im not any less of a Mom for going the "easy" way. Not that major surgery is easy by any means. Decisions...
Someone I know had a rougher recovery after VBAC than after her CS. I think she's still glad she did the VBAC, but might want to check with your doc on the likelihood of an easier recovery. She may have been unlucky.
I delivered my boys vaginally at 36+3, I went into labor on my own. If I hadn't the dr had scheduled a cs/induction (depending on if B had flipped, which thank goodness at my 36 week appt he finally had) at 38 weeks. Baby B was almost 1 pound heavier and they still let me deliver vaginally. I was scared of the double whammy too, B had extra fluid so he had more room to flip if he wanted, luckily he didn't. I was very fortunate how smooth my delivery went.
Mine were born at 38+1. My dr didn't want me to go past 38 weeks either, I did a unplanned c section as my labor wouldn't progress at my induction, I wish I would of let them cook a bit longer as my body was not ready to give birth..but the c section was a piece of cake so it's all good.
