I really don't know much about SIDS at all to form an opinion about this article.

SIDS is really scary though and I certainly support more research to find out what causes it and if there is something we can do to prevent it.

SIDS research is grossly underfunded and overlooked. I truly hope this Dr is on to something and we can find a definitive cause/cure for this awful tragedy.

My nephew (who was with my DH and I part time) passed away from SIDS when he was 3 months old. It is a pain you never recover from. If this Dr's research could prevent other families from having to go through what my family went through, that would be amazing.

Interesting. Looks like they need more info but it's a place to start which is always a good thing. I think I fell somewhere in the middle as far as taking SIDS precautions. We didn't use an angel care monitor, but I kept his crib clear of bumpers, blankets, etc. and kept him on his back with a wearable blanket for as long as I could. However, we both fell asleep nursing in the same bed quite often. Not exactly the safest route, but sometimes you can't help the exhaustion.

Side story: My high school boyfriend had an older sibling die of SIDS before he was born. After my boyfriend was born, his parents put him on a monitor at night. I'm not sure if it measured heart rate or breathing or what (this would have been in the early 80s), but the monitor went off one night alerting them that something was wrong. His dad ran into his room and picked him up and shook him a little. That somehow jump started his breathing/heart rate again and he ended up being fine. Who knows what would have happened had he not been on that monitor. So scary.

Interesting theory and I'm glad that they have something to focus their research, but a terrible article. Whoever wrote it has no idea how to write about scientific studies or statistics.

I'd be interested to know more about his sample size, because the article doesn't state it and they make it sound relatively small. I have no idea how the ear works, but if there were in fact a correlation, wouldn't we see a higher SIDS rate among deaf newborns? Again, not a doctor, so someone please correct me if the inner ear has nothing to do with deafness.

Cudos for SIDS research. Do you guys do Red Nose Day in USA? It's a fundraising campaign which has been around for as long as I can remember. Basically you buy and wear a red nose to raise awareness and money for SIDS research.

Never heard of it, but it sounds like a good idea.

SIDS is scary.  Unfortunately that article did nothing to ease my mind about it.

ETA another thought: certain environmental factors have shown to increase the risk of SIDS.  However I'm not sure I can see a connection between those factors and inner ear problems.

I completely agree that the article is shallow and poorly written. I haven't have a chance to look and see if I can find something more in depth about the research. But what an amazing advancement if this guy has it right!

Huh, interesting. I don't really know what to say not knowing enough biologically myself, but it would definitely be nice if there was a more concrete answer someday than just, not knowing.

We're going with the Levana monitor instead of the Angel Care because for the first few months our baby is going to be in the bassinet and the Angel Care pad won't fit. The Levana clips onto the diaper. I have friends who LOVED their Angel care though!

I bought a Snuza before DD was born (it's the exact same thing)... And I never used it, not even once, despite how terrified I was being a new parent at the time.  But some people do love them and Angelcare monitors.

I used my angel care in my Moses basket no problem.

The bassinet we bought won't fit it and I want baby to be napping in the crib during the day so I think it would we be a pain to lift the crib mattress and move it back and forth each time.

I lost a nephew to SIDS at 7 months old. It's a terrible terrible thing to go through. He was a twin. He had chronic ear infections and a set of tubes, his twin went on for a second set of tubes and had his adenoids out.

I think this doctor could be on to something. Obviously WAY more research needs to be done, but you have to start somewhere right?

His sample size was very small, like 30 or something, but like I said, you have to start somewhere. I'm glad this is circulating and getting awareness.

SIDS scares the poop out of me, and part of the reason we bedshare and/or cosleep. I truly hope that someday we have a cause and a "cure."

I would never but an angel care monitor. My DD was in the NICU for 8 weeks. She had a known heart condition and would have apnea spells. DH was super terrified to take her home. We actually asked the doctor about getting a monitor like it. He said it was more likely to cause us more axiety and stress then help. He promised me that if they truly worked that great he would recommend them to everyone but the truth is they are prone to malfunction and can go off over nothing causing parents to stress more. He said you have about a 50% chance of actually catching a spell with one because if they'll go off without a true problem what's to say they'll go off when there is actually a problem. It gives parents a false security. He suggested investing the money in a good baby monitor and checking on baby regularly. DD slept in outer room in her pack n play for the first 6 months before transitioning to a crib. The doctor also said if you choose to use one make sure it lies flat and there is no incline or bumps as this makes it more prone to go off over nothing. Also remeber it's just a back up and does not replace a monitor or periodicaly checking on baby.

omgtree the only alarms that ever went off when my nephew was using his were when he was off the sensor. The feeling of terror that shoots through you the first time it goes off...

I still want one for reassurance.

My sister lost a baby to SIDS in 1990. Since then my family has tracked the research closely. There's been a lot of theories over the years, and very few of them have panned out. I'm not going to worry too much about this one until there's a lot verification of this new idea.
