The easiest way to describe this part of the journey was 'hurry up and wait!'
We got the call Easter Sunday about 5:30 while we were over at my in-laws place which was really nice since that saved us a ton of phone calls right there since the whole family was over. After we called my side and our best friends, then the panic set it. We raced home and started to pack as much as we thought we would need (which was too much - a baby doesn't need all that much stuff yet).
We left our house at about 6:30 in the morning on Monday and we drove (almost) straight through until we got to the town where the hospital was - about 5.5 hours away. We were able to check in early at a hotel (thanks to the man at the front desk who was also adopted so he was super nice about everything!). We called the local SW to let her know that we were in town and she was currently with a different BM so she had to call us back. So we waited and waited and waited. We then met her at about 4 o'clock to start signing all the paperwork - and it started to feel super real! Because of the hospital policy, we were not able to actually meet him until his discharge - which was Tuesday. So we were signing all this paperwork for a baby we never even saw - that was kind of crazy but we went with it! We finished with her and ran to Wal-Mart to grab a few last minute things (she told us what kind of diapers and formula they had him on so we stocked up on that).
Tuesday morning. We woke up early and waited until the SW called us. She finally called and said for us to meet her as the hospital around 3:30 with the car seat and an outfit - holy cow - this is really happening! Unfortunately, this was at 8 in the morning so we had a LOT of time to kill and just wait. So we drove around, went to a few stores, tried to eat a long lunch and then ended up at the hospital like 30 minutes early because we just couldn't wait any longer!
The BM signed her paperwork at like 2:30 so the SW was coming straight to us after that. Unfortunately, we never met her, never saw her or even a picture of her but when we asked how she was doing, they said she was doing well or as well as could be expected. She didn't want to know the sex of the baby and as far as I know, she still doesn't know it's a boy. I just hope she is getting all the support she needs. I think about her often and hope she is doing well.
Unfortunately, while the hospital's policies were not very Adoption-friendly - I will say the staff there was super supportive and nice! Like I said earlier, we weren't even able to see him until his discharge. When we got to the hospital, we had to wait for the SW and then they put us in a room - still no baby in sight. I was getting super nervous and this particular SW was never as this particular hospital so she wasn't sure if this normal. Turns out, it was very normal. After we signed some more paperwork and they redacted some info from his charts, they brought in 'Baby Boy L'. He has so much blond hair and such pretty blue eyes - as soon as I saw him - I thought that he looks just like DH! I didn't even cry - I thought I would - but I was just too darn happy to cry! They handed him right over to me and he looked up at me and then I knew. I knew this was our son. It also helped that he initiated me into motherhood with lots of throw up - cutest thing ever!
We signed a few more hospital documents and then we were on our way. Terrified - but we were on our way home! The trip home went REALLY well - he slept for 4 hours straight. Little Man loves the car and his car seat. In fact, we just went out to the peds this morning and he is still sleeping in his car seat. LOVES it.
All in all, it was a CRAZY 72 hours but it was worth every last second - plus some.
Introducing, our son, Oliver Henry - 6lbs, 9oz, 19 inches of perfection!
