My little one had a whole body rash that the doctors at first thought was eczema. We tried steroid ointments and it didn't work so they suggested stopping breast feeding for a bit and just pump and freeze and try Nutramagein and see if it improved. They were trying to figure out if it was an allergy of some kind. We used that formula for a month total, but after two weeks we saw no improvement. It kept getting worse and later we were referred to Children's Hospital for an emergency appointment where he was actually diagnosed with a super rare case of severe cradle cap. Anyway, even after that they had us stay on the hypoallergenic food for a while to make sure that the rash was going away. It got much better and we were allowed to switch back.
The formula was hard to switch my LO to at first as he didn't like it. It smelled gross too. It turned his poops into this thick grey clay. He eventually did get used to the new formula after a few days and all was fine while he was on it, but the weird poop stayed. It is very expensive too and LO was going through $28 worth in 3 days. I would recommend asking your pediatrician for samples as they usually get a ton from the formula company. Also, see if your insurance might cover the cost. I think in some states they are required to if its medically necessary.
I hope your little one's rash clears up quickly! It is so hard watching your LO struggle like that!
