Random Question - Hospital Snacks

What do you plan on taking to the hospital for post-birth snacking?  All I can think of is a bar of really nice chocolate.

Snack/energy bars
I think I had packed a snickers for DH...

Beef Jerky? (Is that an acceptable post-birth snack? Cause, yum)

I'll probably bring trail mix or granola bars, nuts, and fruit as well. I hadn't given it too much thought yet.

Nothing. They serve full meals and they have food in the fridge for people with late night deliveries. Even after living off a diet of nothing but ice chips and gaterade for nearly 2 days, I wasn't super hungry after delivery. More tired than anything else.

I'm going to throw in another random question here because I don't know where to post and don't want to create another thread...

Can swaddle blankets be used as receiving blankets? I received 3 x 4 packs of the Aden & Anais muslin swaddle blankets but no receiving blankets at my shower. Do I really need 12 swaddle blankets or should I return one pack?

ETA: Another question...how many bibs should we buy? I was really surprised that we didn't get a single bib at our shower! Do babies only start wearing bibs when they're eating solids? Haha, I'm such a FTM.

My first reaction here is I'll be sending my wife for some McDonalds lol. I've also put bestie on notice that when she arrives she better have a spicy crispy salmon roll with her.

Yes on the blanket question. All blankets are fine Swaddle for A&A just refers to their size.

Bibs- eh. We have a ton of bibs, only 2 of which we bought. She wore them before eating solids because babies drool and she wore them a bit after starting solids, but not that much. She's not a messy kiddo. I'd get a cheapie 6 pack and call it a day until you really need them.

Oh, and I really advocate that y'all pack snacks in your bags. I delivered DD at 4am, and the cafeteria didn't open until 7am. 3 freaking hours after a "natural" birth that I would have had to wait for food if I didn't have my snacks. And believe me, I ate all of them in short order, lol.

I don't know what a receiving blanket is. We didn't use the A&A blankets to swaddle, it was a huge pain, we used swaddle me's the first couple week than a miracle blanket. So I guess it just depends on what you want to use the blankets for!

As for bibs, totally depends on the baby! DS didn't spit up much as a newborn so he didn't use bibs until eating solids, we used mostly the rubber ones for feeding. He drooled a lot when teething, so we used cloth bibs for that.

Our hospital has a room (24/7) with a fridge and snacks in both L&D and postpartum so I'm not sure we'll pack any.

I use receiving blankets as burp clothes mostly.

I have a few swaddle blankets I plan to use for nursing but use sleep sacks and swaddlemes to actually "swaddle."

Our hospital has a stocked fridge in labor and delivery and the maternity rooms. I was pretty pumped to check this out at our class on Monday. The food looked good! They get bagels every morning from wegmans and a ton of other food stocked in the fridge. A legit full kitchen. However at some point I will probably make DH get me something really tasty when I feel like eating again.

The hospital where I had DD was great with food but it was also surround by shopping, a grocery store and restaurants so we didn't pack anything and it was totally fine.
This time the hospital is in a small town without those amenities close, so I might want to consider some snackes!! I'll have to ask about those this time when I visit the hospital.

We used swaddle blankets during the day for DD and Swaddle Me things at night because they were tighter. DH is a better swaddler than I am!
I don't have a single burp rag yet, hoping to make my own burpy bibs this weekend. DD wasn't much for spitting up so we didn't use them for more than just drool really.

Yeah, my hospital has fairly decent meals too (no off-meal-time options other than water, but they do have a kitchen for patient use.)  I'm not worried about being under-nourished while there.  This time, I've got borderline GD and likely 3 days in the hospital after.  And a rare opportunity to have snacks without DS-the-chocolate-fiend stealing whatever I have.

I don't think I will bring anything. Our hospital has a special room in the maternity wing where dad can go grab snacks, drinks, popsicles and even cold sandwiches. I get a 30 min massage before I go home and we get a celebratory steak dinner too which I've heard from several people is actually pretty excellent.

ETA: We were also told we'd be given a menu after delivery and can order any time we want like hotel room service which seems cool.

I mentioned this to DH recently and he looked like I was crazy and said "there's a cafeteria downstairs, I'll get snacks there". You ladies bring up excellent points about being in labor in the MOTN before they would be open so I will definitely pack snacks!

DH has been instructed that I want a tuna salad sandwich and spicy tuna rolls, ahi tuna sashimi in the hospital. I want ALL the tuna!

When I had DD, my aunt came to the hospital with a steak, potatoes, veggies, and bread. She was hosting dinner at her house and left to bring me food. I was ravenous, so I will never forget how awesome she is for bringing me a delicious dinner at midnight. If I have the baby late at night, I may ask someone to get me something at a nearby restaurant (since there will probably be more people than I'd like hanging out in the waiting room). Otherwise, I'll just bring some easy snacks like granola bars, trail mix, etc.

Our hospital had a wide variety of food available almost any time. We bought some Clif bars, and lovely friends brought us chocolate chip cookies.

One note: I had a C-section planned for 9:30 am, and so I couldn't eat after midnight, which was fine--I actually wasn't really hungry until later in the afternoon. DH had breakfast at like 6:30 am before we left home, and he was pretty hungry by 11. We didn't have our suitcase with us in the pre/post op area, so we had no snacks, and he didn't want to leave us to go get anything. So, moral of the story--if you have a C-section, bring your partner a snack

I'm not taking anything. When I had DS I hardly ate at all the whole time I was there & DH isn't a very big "snacker". I may bring bottled juices or soda for him but that's it.

No, our hospital provides meals for me and hey have snacks available 24/7. Plus, we're on a college campus with a cvs, jimmy johns, and Arby's nearby, so...

I don't think you need 12 A+A blankets, they are nice to have but 4ish or 8 should be plenty. For blanket swaddling I like to use the thermal waffle blankets because they are pretty stretchy so you can wrap baby up nice and sung.

As for bibs, they are great to have around, I would just buy one or two of those terry cloth multi packs. They're nice because you can just switch out bibs if baby spits up or is too drooly instead of changing the whole outfit. I also use them when the lo's have runny noses so I don't have to keep tissues everywhere.

My hospital provides food 'round the clock.  I gave birth at 2:42am and by 3am they had sent up a muffin and a sandwich.  Which I didn't eat, but hey - it's the thought that counts!


belle0720, You'll be fine with the A&A. And honestly, 12 doesn't seem crazy to me. I had them everywhere. Kept one in my diaper bag, one in each car, all over the house - they're really useful. As for bibs, we never used a single bib until he started solids. And at that point you don't want those little cloth bibs, you want the big plasticy ones that wipe off/clean easily.

Not bringing any food. The hospital I'm delivering at has good food and I don't remember actually being that hungry after delivery. I was so overwhelmed with the whole experience and so exhausted I just wanted to hold my baby and sleep! I'll probably bring a pack of gum or mints though

I would keep all of them. I used the swaddle blankets for so many things. As burp clothes. As an extra sun shade draped over the stroller or portable car seat carrier etc. I also used them to swaddle a lot for day time naps. At night I didn't use them though I used the swaddle me Velcro wraps.

we easily had 8-12 blankets for swaddling DS1, but he was born in late winter, so we used two blankets at a time to make sure he was both warm enough and snug enough. It was also how the nurses taught us. We'd periodically have to change them in the MOTN too.

We also had 10-12 terry bibs bc he started drooling at 4mo and it was nonstop until he had most of his teeth.

I think it all depends on how often you want to do laundry.

We used cloth diaper inserts for burp cloths.

We use the same OB, too, although I go to their north hills office!
