My favorite places in Pittsburgh are Dave and Andy's and Bruster's homemade ice cream. Handel's is good, too; they're mostly in Ohio but we have one by our house.
Funny, I just ran to the fro yo place five minutes away for a large choc/vanilla twist with strawberries and hot fudge and chocolate sprinkles!
Dairy Queen lover here. I loveeee a soft serve cone from DQ. Sadly, I can't go to any of the scoop ice cream places because it's way too risky with a nut allergy because they share scoops between the flavors.
I do love me some Dairy Queen, and I can put away Marble Slab (sweet cream with chocolate chips and Oreos, usually), but my absolute favorite is a local ice cream place called Old Dutch---totally amazeballs. Around Mardi Gras, they have Moon Pie and King Cake ice cream. So freaking good.
I love me some Blue Bell. In the fall, their Spiced Pumpkin Pecan is freaking the best stuff ever. I also love their homemade vanilla, and all the cobbler flavors. Anything they make is good.
We have an Orange Leaf and I like that. We JUST got a Dairy Queen, but I try to stay away. It's still pretty new, so the line is always long. Wish we had custard. Miss that ish.
Now, veering from ice cream a teeny bit. We have a snowcone place that puts soft serve ice cream in the middle of the snow cone and on top. So yummy. And if I'm being good, they have sugar free syrups.
My favorite is a place called scoops in our neighborhood. They have traditional classics but I go for the exotic flavors. They have an amazing one that is basil goat cheese ice cream and then they are most known for their flavor called Brown Bread. It's sooooo good. The secret ingredient is grape nuts cereal. They also have a cinnamon horchata flavor that is really good (a play on the Mexican dessert drink)

Salt & Straw is a local fancy ice cream shop often with a line down the block. I hate to love it but I just can't help myself. My favorite flavor is the sea salt vanilla with caramel ribbons. They also come up with some wacky flavors and combinations. I don't go often because I refuse to pay $8.50 for a pint.
I love self serve fro yo places with the European tangy plain yogurt with tons of berries and kiwi on top!
Im not huge on ice cream, but we have a local family place that does fairs and festivals... Best old fashioned ice cream. It's my all time favorite! Otherwise I mostly pass on ice cream.
Growing up in Vermont, I have no choice but to be a Ben and Jerry's girl. I worked at the original scoop shop in Burlington, VT for several years during high school and college. I have so many great memories of that place, and the ice cream is sooooo good.
I really miss all the local creameries back home (I'm from CT but live in TX). I'll usually hit Baskin Robbins for a scoop of chocolate peanut butter. But since moving south I've pretty much converted to snow cones. There's an awesome place near me call Bahama Bucks. They have a zillion flavors and all sorts of add-ons. Mmmm....snow cone...
There's a chain in Michigan called Kilwins that I love. They have a branch near my parents' condo in Fl too. Now that we don't live in MI anymore, I can still get a fix a couple of times a year when we're at the beach.
Mmm...I have a few. Rita's is my fave for their water ice (actually tastes a little like ice cream, no dairy). Culver's was my favorite place in the Midwest for custard, and I'm sad we don't have any in FL. But...I did discover an awesome ice cream shop down here called Sloan's - we have a couple just around the town I'm in so I don't know if they're a chain or not. They are fantastic though and I love their cookie cookie dough ice cream. Even the ice cream itself is cookie dough flavored. Mmm.

Our local frozen yogurt place is called Skinny Dip. They change out the flavors daily and who knows how many toppings are at the topping bar. But the name itself is a fun one because half the time you mention going to Skinny Dip, people who've never heard of it either look appalled or really excited since we also live by the beach.

My favorite place is Sno to Go in Williamsburg, Virginia. My favorite place that is not 500+ miles from home is Culver's for soft custard or Handel's for proper ice cream. I also have a weakness for Rita's Italian Ice, but I usually only go if I'm already in a part of the city that has one.
I'm only mildly fond of Jeni's, which makes me a terrible Columbusite. It's good, but over-priced and overrated. The flavors are odd sometimes, too.
