Talk to me about gates. I need something for the stairs to the basement, but there is a railing bracket blocking the top, so I'm not sure how to attach one.

Any thoughts on how to put one at the top of the stairs without screwing into the wall? We'd like to have one at my parents' cabin, but it's a log cabin with all wood paneling so we'd like to try and avoid screwing into it if we can.

I saw they do make some pressure ones. But I wonder if they would leave a dent with how tight it would need to be.

We've got that for our kitchen doorway. Not ideal for top of the stairs because they can be pushed over with enough momentum/force.
Is it a railing or wall? They do make some railing ones that go around the post.
Both. One side is a railing (so doable to work around) and one side is the wall we'd like to not drill into if possible. It may not be and they may just have to put a couple of holes in it, but I'm just trying to cover my bases first.
I forgot to type that it doesn't screw into the wall. It has gear type things you turn until it's super tight!
If you push really hard would it come down?
We have that gate too bc one of our dogs would jump on top of the original baby gate we had and knock it over. This one is extra tall and would take an elephant to knock down.

I'm in the same boat. We're currently leaning a plastic one up at the top of the stairs and not letting DD out of our sight. We need a more permanent option but our stairs are tricky. We had a nice walk mounted gate at our old house and I miss it.

I need some baby gate advice as well! So, we know what we're going to purchase for our upstairs staircase but we also need something for the stairs that go down to our basement. The issue is, the cats litter box is down in the basement. So what do we do?! Are there baby gates out there that have pet doors? Would the baby crawl through that?! Help!

We gate off our family room right now with 2 pressure mounted gates that I love. I'll try to find the link. Not sure if it would work for the stairs though and I'm thinking I want to find something for the stairs now too.

I saw a Pinterest hack where someone used zip ties to attach it to the stairs railing instead of using screws.

Our neighbors did that. Totally worked.
Need an option for a wall at the top of the stairs. Zip tie won't work and pressure gate isn't sturdy enough. Probably will do gates on the bedroom doors instead. If they knock that over, it gives us time to get to them before they can reach the stairs.

I assume you dont want to screw it into the stud?
It's a log cabin, so trying to avoid screwing into the wood paneling.
