I was just curious since DH and I went to the Asian grocery the other day.... Does YH/SO eat any unusual foods that other people might not be accustomed to? Did you adopt any of his eating habits?

I mean, H eats Korean food. Most of it western people are kinda iffy on. His mom sends all kinds of shit over. kimchi, squid, seaweed soup. Most Korean food is delicious, though! Since MIL watches the kids, they eat all kinds of Korean food. My older LO asked me for soup for breakfast on Saturday.
My DH eats balut. I told him he cannot eat that in front of me ever! So gross! However, I have fallen in love with most dishes including oxtail. Yum! I also thought I'd share I tried Green Tea kitkats that we picked up at the grocery. If you like green tea which I do they are amazing!
I'm honestly so glad I married DH for many reasons but he expanded my eating in so many ways and so many things I would have never tried if I didn't meet him.

I used to eat a lot of unique/weird foods. We keep kosher now so that's limited my diet a lot. Fortunately, I don't really miss it unless my family is going out for dim sum. Then I briefly reconsider my life choices. lol.
DH is white, so his idea of weird food is pizza with mushrooms on it. I love all Korean and Japanese food, and luckily, he likes garlic and spicy food. However, he hates fish so my only hope of eating it is at restaurants. I can't even cook it at home bc he acts like the smell is going to materialize and choke him to death. -_- He likes the taste of kimchi, but hates the smell. He's pretty picky with his food based on smell and texture and what it looked like when it was alive lol. My favorite seafood is squid. He likes to take it off my plate and make it talk to me and say whyyyyy don't eat me ahhh. I'm sure other diners appreciate it.

My oldest DD is really into Asian culture especially Korean. We lived a year in an area that had a heavy Korean population. She was just talking about this on Friday. She wants to try these kit kats!!

My current H is Black American. So no special foods. His grandmother grew up on the cotton fields in GA so there is a heavy soul food influence in our house. Ham Neck Bones, turkey necks are used for seasoning. Oxtail is one my favs.
My ExH is Liberian. I fell in love with Jollof rice, FuFu, Pepper Soup, rice bread, cassava leaf, potato greens, and peanut stews. Oh and Plaintans. I never learned how to cook the food and now that I am in FL there is not a West African Restaurant near by. The only thing close is a Ethiopian Restaurant, which is different.

kaeguri we always have kimchi in the fridge and the smells gets everywhere, even in the ice in the freezer! I like to eat it, but I hate the smell, too. I try to put it in glass tupperware and put layers of plastic wrap before I snap the lid on and the smell still gets out. You can be in another room and know when someone's opened the fridge. I think MIL just needs to send smaller containers. Or maybe I need to clean my fridge
I've taught myself to cook a few Korean dishes for H, but they're never as good as his mom's! The last time I made kimchi chigae to get rid of some, he ate it and said "this is pretty good, but you should ask my mom how she makes it" -_-
Maggie0424, is balut the duck egg thing? I'm pretty open-minded about food, but I can't even being to imagine why anyone would want to eat that.
Yes it is. The duck egg with the fetus inside. It's so wrong! Granted he hasn't eaten any since we were early married so it's been years. I hope he doesn't get a craving for one.

Airtight containers help a lot, but the smell is... pervasive lol. Plus kimchi needs to breathe, according to my mom. I love the smell. I can understand why non-Koreans don't though.
And I agree with the mom thing. I made chicken noodle soup using his mom's recipe she gave me and H said the same thing about it. -_-

DH has no weird foods, but he's constantly be bothered by me to try new things. He cannot get into some Persian things that I love - like dried white mulberries or eggplant dip with bread. He does like Iranian nougat. Doesn't like the mint/cucumber yogurt dish my mom makes, but I love it. I make it when he makes Indian because otherwise I get heartburn.
Nothing overly weird I guess? Persians have weird things, though - rice noodle rose water ice cream called faloodeh (way too rosy for me to eat unless I dump lemon juice over it), and doogh (which I call ugh, my maman gets mad at me).
My H has terrible eatimg habits. Nothing weird, just very stereotypical frat boy fare: any combination of meat, cheese, and white bread, or anything with buffalo sauce.
He has expanded his palate exponentially since we met. He now loves Indian and Thai food, and has tried lots of traditional Jewish foods too (and likes some of them).

Yeah. My coworkers think I'm crazy when I come in with stuff they aren't use to. They try them but think they are gross. Couldn't tell you the names but I love them so much! Our LO will definitely have a broad choice of foods. Haha

omg are we married to the same guy??
For the sake of your palate and appetite, I hope not!

I love green tea Pocky too!! Balut?! Yikes!! How brave of him
Hmm, well some of my ILs are from Kansas, so they eat a lot of Jello salads. And I had never tried green bean casserole until the first holiday I spent with them.
In our relationship its my family with the "unusual" foods. Smoked herring, chopped liver and gefilte fish are a few of the things DH does not appreciate about Jewish food! But overall I've broadened his horizons a lot: he tried sushi for the first time on one of our early dates, and over the years has also come to enjoy Indian, Thai, Afghan, Vietnamese and I'm sure even more that I'm forgetting right now!
DH is is white; and, I'm Viet. Fortunately, DH has an adventurous palette. So, he'll eat anything me or the family puts out except durian. If I get my durian shakes, I'm sitting outside with it on my own. lol

I've never had durian, but I've smelled it. Is there a way to describe the taste? I've always wanted to try it, and a lot of my friends love it, but I can't bring myself to buy a whole one when I may end up throwing the entire thing away.

*lurking*
My hubby's stepmom is Vietnamese. She has been a part of his life since he was 7 so he's grown up on Vietnamese fare. His favorite is Pho, and I don't make it well. I've even tried. ?
Married DH 09/21/13 BCP 08/08-02/12, 01/13-08/14 Paragard 02/16-? TTC#1 August '14 1st BFP 3/9/15! EDD: 11/17/15 Emma Rose born 11/26/15 (Thanksgiving!)
DH is Caucasian and I'm African American. He actually ends up eating more of my culture's food than the other way around. He grew up with a family who only adds salt to their foods, so he absolutely loves it when I cook. He didn't even know you could fry chicken without a deep fryer! We spent this past Thanksgiving together and he was shocked at the homemade mac and cheese, homemade cranberry sauce and everything. Luckily, he loves it all.
So far his favorite is Jamaican oxtails. My grandmother is from the islands and it's one of her tried and true recipes. Whenever we have extra spending money I spoil him with it!

My DH's family is the same with the salt. He never had garlic until I cooked for him!
