So I need healthier food options in my life. I hardly eat any fruit or veggies and figure the easiest way to correct this is smoothies. But honestly I've never made a smoothie! Best to use fresh or frozen fruit? I assume fresh veggies like spinach & kale (anything other veggies work In smoothies?). What liquid do you put in? I'm thinking yogurt & milk?
Yes I realize this shouldn't be complicated but for some reason I find it hard.
First: you should invest in a good quality blender: Vitamix or Blendtech. The others - even supposedly "good" brands won't last. We spent a good amount on a cuisenart and it crapped out after like 6 months. ETA: the cheaper ones are good for occasional use or softer stuff...but if you're going to grind up frozen things every day they will not last.
I make a smoothie every morning for breakfast, I use fresh and frozen fruit.
My recipe:
Almond milk Greek Yogurt A banana A spoonfull of chia seeds Half spoonfull of natural peanut butter Handfull of spinach and kale leaves Fresh strawberries Frozen mix of blueberries, raspberries and blackberries
Here's what I usually make (if you use all fresh fruit, I'd throw in some ice to make it cold):
Any milk (coconut milk for a rich treat!) 1/2 avocado 1 banana about 1/2 cup frozen blueberries or mango handful of spinach Chia seeds honey and cinnamon to taste
You can really come up with whatever creation you deem delicious. I'm pretty simple in my smoothie making ways. I'm not a big fan of ones with ice or frozen fruits. I usually do:
strawberries banana yogurt milk
and then i might add in some spinach or kale to get some of those nutrients

I got some in the organic food section of my Stop & Shop.
I get a big bag at Costco. Can't remember how much it is, but it's not a lot - 10 bucks maybe - and it lasts months
I totally mix up the combo too, based on what's in the fridge. We have some honeydew melon that's close to the end of it's life, so I've been adding that too - same with apples.
I go through phases with smoothies. They're definitely an awesome way to add more fruit & veg into your life. I've found that I like spinach over kale or other greens--spinach just blends into all the other fruits (plus it makes your smoothie an awesome green color) but kale left a bitter aftertaste I didn't like.
I usually do: --frozen fruit (berries, peaches, pineapple, mango, any combo of those) -- 1/2 banana --greek yogurt --milk/almond milk/water
Pinterest is like the holy land of smoothie recipes. The key I found is to make sure not to load up on sugar, so I make sure to use plain yogurt and some kind of milk or water rather than juice for liquid content.
Another great combo is a banana/peanut butter/whatever else you want. So tasty!

YeaH I had to do a health assessment thing for insurance and one of the questions asked how many servings of fruits & veggies I had daily. Uh none? Maybe 1? I realized my diet is all dairy/carbs/protein & junk. So hopefully drinking a smoothie for breakfast or lunch every day will be a good solution!
