I agree. And I have something to bitch about!! It's probably a total first world problem, but whatever.
My lease is up this summer on my little VW Jetta and I really want to get a bigger vehicle. Although it's super early on in this pregnancy, we know that we want kids, and definitely more than one (if we are so lucky!) SO I was looking online at different SUVs today and my husband was totally against the idea because of the $$$ - he thinks that I should either buy out my Jetta or get a different small car!! He says that if we need to use an SUV, we can use his vehicle, but I don't think that he understands that I'm the one who's going to be with the baby most of the time and that even going to the grocery store is going to require a ton of vehicle space (I think that he's thinking we'll only need to use a bigger vehicle for when we're all together and going camping or something!)
As I said, total first world problem because we both have vehicles that are in good shape and will completely be able to keep us and baby safe and get us from point A to point B, but UGGGGGH, can't my husband just understand what I'm talking about?? Haha, an argument for a few months from now I think...
As long as it's got 4 doors I would agree with your SO about just keeping the jetta. I don't know where/when the idea came around that you need a large vehicle to have kids. But you really don't. H got a new car when S was born, but that was because his old one was a death trap. I will be getting a car this summer, but it won't be any bigger than his current car, which is a Pontiac vibe, so not very big. Also, we looked at some SUV's when we were car shopping, and some of them had TINY backseats.
I have a bitch. Insomnia+pregnancy+kid being a brat equals grouchy mama. So I had a minor breakdown and told H I needed a break. He suggested I go for a walk.
Now fine, yes, a walk would be good for me. HOWEVER, that is not remotely what I meant. I meant that I need a freaking afternoon or evening away from this crappy little apartment that I hate with the fire of a thousand suns, and away from the 3 year old, and maybe even away from H, but NoOoO. I can't get anywhere by myself yet, and H is trying to save money by never going out, and even if I COULD get somewhere, I'd be alone, and I don't do alone in public well.
This is a no win situation that I've been dealing with for like 4 years. Most of it isn't H's fault, but adding hormones to loneliness, and lack of sleep is not doing nice things for me today. I'm currently holed up in my bedroom until supper, after which H is going to his twice weekly game night.

pineappledeelight, I don't think you need a bigger vehicle to have kids but it sure is nice! We traded in my car after we were married for an Equinox and I love having the room. I stay home with my daughter so we go everywhere in that car. It's nice to have the room for groceries and other things because sometimes it's nice not to have to pack it all around your kid who will eventually start digging and emptying your bags for you in the car. (I put a bag too close to my daughter once and she took it upon herself to empty it and smash the chips.)

rlpointer86 I agree, it sure is nice to have a bigger car with kids. With our SUV you could stand straight up while buckling kids in the carseats, instead of being hunched over, half in half out of a sedan. Plus extra room for the stroller is nice too.

Lollipop, shoogars, rlpointer86, thanks for the advice!! I've heard both ways from friends IRL as well - many people are totally fine with their cars and others get frustrated and end up getting either an SUV or a mini van. We'll see what happens this summer when the decision needs to be made!!
I remember as a kid my mom had a gremlin, so small cars are definitely possible, but have you seen the size of strollers lately? It would eat up so much trunk space! Are you going to have a pet on top of all that?

tez - right? Strollers are giant!! And yes, we have a standard poodle mix who, although she won't be hitting up the grocery store with us, comes a lot of places with us!!
Haha, I'll have to show my hubby this thread once we're making the decision!

I'll also be getting an SUV this year. Trying to put my DD in her car seat in my little car is a PITA! I'm tall, so I think that makes it worse. Also, I live in the Midwest where we can get snow Oct-April...looking forward to 4WD!!!

We bought an SUV last year sort of on a whim. It took me about six months to be convinced to sell my car, but now I love driving it. It's mid-sized, but big enough to tow a utility trailer. It also has a roomy cargo space. Some that I have seen didn't and I don't want to drive something too big. I think there will be plenty of room for baby and my beloved labrador.
I don't think you need it for baby, but it's nice to have. We just wanted something bigger in general. We still have been those people though at Lowe's that get out to the parking lot and realize what we bought will not fit. We've had to sit and wait for someone we know with a truck to come and swap with us. Oops.
kelltothekell, I possibly could, but I'd need H to drop me off and pick me up, because I can't drive alone yet. Hopefully this summer I'll get my license and a car.
pineappledeelight, Go somewhere that will allow you to do a trial install of an infant seat and/or a rear-facing car seat. I found in my Subaru Impreza sport (like an Outback Sport), that the front seat had to be so far forward to accommodate the carseat in the back that it had to go behind the passenger seat and the passenger had to sit with their knees to their chest. FF was fine, but RF sucked.
I'll bitch now. My husband and I have the same cold. He got it a couple days before me and spent 2 days home from work sleeping. I SAH, am sick and pregnant, and still made dinner last night, got up with #4 at 5:24 this morning (and every time he woke up last night), and have done several loads of laundry today. I just want to sleep for a while. The luggage under my eyes is horrible. I'm not cooking tonight. I'll open a can of soup and they can deal or my husband can cook. All I want is a nap.

LT for the first half. We tried a few different vehicles, and some that were much bigger than what we ended up with had teeny backseats with no room for a car seat.

Hope you feel better soon rnmommy! Isn't it funny how being sick somehow has a different effect on men?? Like, they must get stronger strains of these viruses or something .
