Nutrition is a sticking point for me with DD. She does not get school lunch and I'm rather choosy about what we bring into the house for her to eat. Oreos will not pass my child's lips (with my knowledge) at 4 years old. Nope. I care moderately about a mom sending them with her kid to school. It's really not my place to tell other parents' what to pack for lunches, assuming they aren't packing Hawaiian Punch, cheetos and oreos for the kid's lunch every day.
That said, I'm also side-eyeing the school's note. WTF is that about having bread if a meal also has potatoes? I'm not aware of any nutritional benefit to having two carbs in one meal. And that they allow candy for holidays? Nope nope nope.
I pack all of DD's school meals. She gets 4 ounces of whole milk (2oz per cup); breakfast (a grain, a protein and a fruit or veg); lunch (a grain, a protein, a dairy item, a veg and a fruit); and a snack (cookies or crackers [of the no-fun, "healthy" variety, lol], a fruit and either yogurt or a cheese stick).|
She does get "treats" lest y'all think I'm a horrible mom For example, she knows what ice cream is and can have it on occasion at home. I just buy the least junk-filled version I can.
Like I said, this isn't where I'm "breezy" parenting-wise.
ETA: she got her first taste of cake around 2 years old, when her classmates started turning 2. She got breastmilk almost exclusively until she was 2 (instead of switching to white cow's milk or other "milk" at 1 year). She started getting potato chips (the "healthy" versions) around 12m, because DH ate them in front of her My mom gave her the "unhealthy" versions around 20m, lol. She got her first chocolate chip cookie (organic! gluten free! lol) at 18m? I think?
We got a bit more relaxed around 18-24m.
