I got a pattern that I liked, and would've gotten it whether I had a boy or girl.. BUT, the first one I had, the style of the bag was not great. It was tall, narrow, and didn't have much give when it came to the width. Keep that in mind.. The second one I got is great! It's a satchel, and is so roomy..
First style that is NOT good:
Style bag I have now, which I love:
They're both JJ Cole, and Amazon sells them, but I definitely recommend the satchel style..
I had the first one. Things got lost in the depths of the bag all the time. It also started ripping pretty quick.
I was planning on getting a neutral diaper bag that both my husband or I could use. My mom came over earlier in the week and surprised me with a beautiful Kate Spade bag that I mentioned liking a few weeks ago. Luckily it's black, pretty well shaped and seems to have plenty of pockets. I'm a FTM so I guess I will find out how functional it really is down the road lol. My only issue now is, it definitely looks very much like a purse and I can't see MH carrying it around! Do you ladies think it's worth it to get a second diaper bag for MH (something like a backpack) that he may be more comfortable carrying? I'm not sure if it's one of those things that seem like a good idea now, but will end up not being used and stuffed in a closet.
YES!!! 100x yes. DH had a cheap insulated backpack one from Target that he used if it was just him or if we were going to a theme park/zoo/etc. somewhere where I didn't want to bring my whole bag around.
I bought a pretty neutral one with DS (black/silver) and that worked so well bcse DH didn't mind carrying it as well. This time around, I'll prob go for one that looks more like a purse I would own, since that's essentially what it becomes in addition to carrying baby stuff!
Buying a diaper bag based on the gender makes no sense to me. You're the one carrying around the bag - sometimes to places where you don't necessarily want a big monster truck or ballerina plastered on the side. Also, if you plan on having more than one kid, chances are that you'll want to use the same bag. I've used the same bag with DS and DD.
Get a bag that's practical and that suits your sensibility and style. When DH and I were expecting our first, we registered for an Eddie Bauer backpack-style bag because there was a good chance that DH might be carrying it too, and we were told that backpacks are great for completely hands-free management of kids:
It's served use well for the past four years. My mom also surprised me with a Vera Bradley diaper bag a few years ago - brown, quilted with a waterproof lime, patterned interior. I absolutely love it. And it's certainly beautiful, but it's not for a "boy" or "girl" baby - it's for me! I've used it with both DS and DD.
ETA, second pic:
My wife would love that backpack bag. We've been having some diaper bag drama in our house for a year. Yes, a whole year, my wife and I can't agree on a diaper bag. She did all this research and bought a $200 diaper bag that she hates. I have to agree it's awful. So I started using a 31 bag and loved it. She didn't. Now we're using a regular backpack, which is ok. But now with baby #2, she wants the one you posted. I Keep telling her we should each get our own but she disagrees. I just can't with the diaper bags anymore.
We went to the store and I let DH pick one out that he'd be willing to carry. He has every other week off and we knew he'd be carrying the bag just as often as I did. We got a JJ Cole at BRU that wasn't too expensive, and it's still in great shape so we'll be using it for baby #2 as well. It looks a lot like this except all gray.

Thank you! This is definitely going to be a learning experience trying to figure out what I think I need versus what I actually need.

With my DD we got a pink and brown one and hubby carried it around. But she was a suprise baby and so we went with the more affordable (ie cheap, bought at ross)One, it did the job but it got rough looking fast. So this time I want something that will last a while and look good. I carried a diaper bag for almost 2 years so I really want it to be something I love. I really like this one. Just not sure how long it will last. www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=34385076&cagpspn=plab_18252032&camp=PLAPPCG-_-PID18252032:BRUS&eESource=CAPLA_DF:34385076:TRUS
Anyone have suggestions for styles that work best with using a wrap? Or seems like a backpack would work well, that is until you can start doing back carries. By that time would you possibly be able to throw what you need in a bigger purse?

Something that is cross body has worked great for me.
With DS I originally bought a skip hop that really could have been considered gender neutral. Honestly, I hated it. Too diaper bag ish and not stylish enough. After a while (and the need to carry so much stuff subsided) I swapped over to a plain navy PBK tote that I had monogrammed for him. I really have enjoyed that. This time around I definitely want to splurge on something for ME that I love. Good gracious you carry that thing everywhere.

I second the back pack. We use an Okkatots bag and both love it. Being hands free carrying her in and out of places is a lot easier for me now ("now" being that she can't walk yet;). I use a wrislet type thing that straps to the stroller when I don't need the big bag.
My mom bought ours...which I was hesitant of at first because I wanted to pick my own but I like what she got. Carter's brand gender-neutral bags are like $45 for TWO bags and a bottle coozy. I use the smaller size for everyday and the larger size when we travel. They've held up great. Ours are brown with green trim which is perfect for either DH or I to carry since I'm not a girly girl. Here's a link: Carter's diaper bags

Holy crap I found one I actually want!!!! This backpack looks super practical!!!
TTC#1 since Feb 2011 With an RE since 2012 August 2012/March 2014: Med cycles, 5 IUIs, 5 IVFs and nothing. Diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)
We adopted four embryos! Transferred 2 - they both took!!! Rebecca & Sara born at 23 weeks on 04/06/15. Rest in peace my angels. May 2016 - Transferred one embryo. BFP on 5/11!! We are due in January 2017!
My SIL loves her petunia picklebottom bags. I've started looking at them and I think I know what I want but I'm waiting to see if they come out with more patterns between now and when baby is born. She has 4 and her recommendation was the wistful weekender for a new mom.
I had a neutral one with my first, thinking I would use it with every kid. I hated it! I have never used a diaper bag with ds2. I just throw everything in my purse and go. I am looking for something else this time around though.
I had two top of the line diaper bags with DD, and neither have ever been used. I got a 31 tote thing (their super common one) for a shower gift and a Patem pad and those two things are really all I've ever needed. I throw in whatever I need and I'm off. Way too easy. Stylish, no - but I could care less. Efficient trumps style these days.
I just wanted to throw my two cents in. I have a Vera Bradley diaper bag, and I hate it with a passion. We also have a diaper dude backpack I love. I got the Vera as a gift so I feel bad not using it, but it's similar to carrying around all the stuff crammed in a plastic grocery sack.
I'll get one that's my style. I want something that looks more like a large purse than a baby bag. I'd really love a coach bag, but I won't be able to bring myself to spend the money on it. Pottery Barn Kids has a nice classic looking one that I'm considering.

Do you have any outlet centers by you? There's a coach outlet near where I live and I've seen cute diaper bags there. They usually have the whole store on sale and then every so often they will have an additional 30% off. It's worth looking into, they are definitely much less pricey than at the mall.

Yes! That's where I've gotten my last two coach bags. I was just wondering if they would have diaper bags there, for some reason I doubted it.

My cousin got her diaper bag there about a year ago and it was really nice. I don't know if they keep them stocked all the time, but I know they definitely carry them!
