I know its early to be thinking about it but I am a planner and like to shop early. So I was wondering if you are buying your diaper bag based on the sex of the baby (Boy diaper bag for a boy, you know what I mean). Or are you buying what you like? I am not a big fan of characters so I won't be rocking a Minnie Mouse bag for my son. But I wanted to start looking around and Hubby says that is something I should wait to buy until we know what we are having which seems weird to me.

For DD I bought a girly diaper bag, for DS I used a 31 bag, for this LO I want a nice bag that is my style. I have yet to find a reasonably priced one that I like.

I want something that is my style, even if its a boy I don't want a camo bag or anything like that. I will just see what I find and fall in love with and see if hubby approves lol.
I really loved my PPB Boxy. It was an older version made of cloth and one of my BM bottles ended up exploding all over it on a warm day. Needless to say it was ruined. I'll probably get another one just cause I loved being able to "roll out" the changing table anywhere.
I found a Coach diaper bag at a consignment shop and used that for a while. I want a bigger one this time around with better straps if I go that route. Otherwise, I'll probably stick with my 31 bag that I have been using for DS lately.
Nope, I'm simply going to buy what appeals to me. The one we used with DD was complete crap after a year and a half so I threw it away. It was literally falling apart. I'm so excited to buy a new one. I'm not going cheap this time around, and I'm going to think way more about funcion. The one I've fallen in love with is $210 (eek!). Surprisingly my H wasn't in total shock when I smiled big and showed it to him. He simply said "That would be a nice Mother's Day gift." Fuck yeah it would! Now if I don't get it, I'm going to be disappointed.

I'm team green, but even if I wasn't, I'd still base my decision off of my personal style because the fact of the matter is, I'm going to be glued to this bag for a while, and it's essentially going to be my purse, and then some. (That was a really long run-on sentence. Just let it happen)
Buying a diaper bag based on the gender makes no sense to me. You're the one carrying around the bag - sometimes to places where you don't necessarily want a big monster truck or ballerina plastered on the side. Also, if you plan on having more than one kid, chances are that you'll want to use the same bag. I've used the same bag with DS and DD.
Get a bag that's practical and that suits your sensibility and style. When DH and I were expecting our first, we registered for an Eddie Bauer backpack-style bag because there was a good chance that DH might be carrying it too, and we were told that backpacks are great for completely hands-free management of kids:
It's served use well for the past four years. My mom also surprised me with a Vera Bradley diaper bag a few years ago - brown, quilted with a waterproof lime, patterned interior. I absolutely love it. And it's certainly beautiful, but it's not for a "boy" or "girl" baby - it's for me! I've used it with both DS and DD.

I had two top of the line diaper bags with DD, and neither have ever been used. I got a 31 tote thing (their super common one) for a shower gift and a Patem pad and those two things are really all I've ever needed. I throw in whatever I need and I'm off. Way too easy. Stylish, no - but I could care less. Efficient trumps style these days.
I want something neutral with lots of pockets! I wouldn't mind getting it monogramed but I know it's going to get carried instead of purse at that point and I want something that doesn't look like a child picked it out.
I am the same....I'm not carrying around some Winnie the Pooh bag!! I've had to Coach bags that I have loved and always gotten tons of compliments on. I'll be getting another one this time around as well!!
I have one in mind, but I can't figure out how to post pics on here yet. Im not into the babyish diaper bags. I'll pick one that basically looks like a giant purse, and hubs will pick out a plain, messenger bag kind.
I had a Ju Ju Be BFF bag. It was fine. Lots of pockets, very large, and an included changing pad. I needed something my husband would carry too, so no purses. After about 1-1.5 years though I just started putting stuff in my purse.

good husband! i should start hinting around, mine is good at making amazon lists to track things i've mentioned and surprising me with them later...

Efficiency is important. I had a pretty long list of things I wanted in a diaper bag since this is my 2nd time around. The first one I picked out because I was all "Oh, how cute!" not thinking about how poorly it was designed.
I got a pattern that I liked, and would've gotten it whether I had a boy or girl.. BUT, the first one I had, the style of the bag was not great. It was tall, narrow, and didn't have much give when it came to the width. Keep that in mind.. The second one I got is great! It's a satchel, and is so roomy..
First style that is NOT good:
Style bag I have now, which I love:
They're both JJ Cole, and Amazon sells them, but I definitely recommend the satchel style..
Samesies! My diaper bag is neutral (gray, white, yellow). If DS had been a girl, I honestly would've gotten a totally girly bag (and then regretted it if/when LO2 was a boy!).
When it comes to stuff like diaper bags, car seats, strollers, etc. neutral really is the way to go (unless you are OAD).

Lindy - I was looking at possibly switching to that since it has the same backpack ability and insulated pockets I want. Did you like it? I did the same and switched to a normal purse by the time DS was on solids and not having blowouts.
We got an all black Skip Hop Duo diaper bag. I wanted something that either DH or I would be willing to carry. Honestly he carried it more than I did. It wasn't wide enough, so I'm interested something larger this time around for big trips. Eventually I switched to the Skip Hop Pronto. I liked it for quick trips out where you only need a few diapers and wipes. I would use it as my purse.

I really liked it. I'll be using it again this time so it held up well too.

Haha. He knows not to question me anymore or give me a hard time about stuff I want to buy. I work full time like he does, and I don't splurge a lot, so when I do he knows it's a big deal for me. And now that I'm getting older (not old, just older), I know it's quality over quantity and you get what you pay for. He's finally starting to get it. I'd rather have less nice things, than a whole house full of cheap shit.
I will start this off by saying, I did not ready any replies, sorry if I repeat anything.
Frist, I don't agree on buying based on sex of child. Ask your DH if he wants to carry around a bright pink diaper bag when he is out with said child without you. I think not. Buy a bag that you both will not be embarrassed with in public. (We have a green and black diaper bag and have a daughter)
Second, buy when you find one you like. You don't have to wait.
Third, spend the extra money on an extra good bag. I hate our diaper bag. Hate it with a passion. I told H we would be purchasing a new one, and expensive one at that. I hate my diaper bag because it's impossible to keep organized. It has all these pockets and stuff but they are useless. This bag is like an oversized purse, you put stuff in and can never find it again. I want a bag that is made from thick sturdy material, easy to use, and stays organized. I also want one that is a back pack style, so much easier to carry around when it's just you and baby.
Just my thoughts on diaper bags. Now I guess I need to start looking too.
I went for functionality over style, and I do not regret it at all. The one I got was from LandsEnd, a small-ish black duffle looking thing that came with a changing pad and a wet bag. It was like $35. Bought it for my son, and still going strong. (Sadly, I don't see it on their website)
Seriously, include your partner on this decision and get a unisex bag. Because you're going to want them to carry it, too. If you get something that's essentially a purse, don't be surprised if your husband doesn't want to carry it.

Lol yeah my husband wouldn't carry a purse looking diaper bag. There were times we would go out and it was nice to have him carry the bag while I carried the baby. So having a me bag and a him bag wasn't practical, because we both needed to carry it when going out.
We used a black fisher price diaper back pack for our DS, trust me, backpack are so much easier then a bag with straps that are constantly falling off your shoulder as you hold your LO in our arms. Plus they come in brown, black, and green. Pretty gender neutral, and tons of space! Good luck!

I was planning on getting a neutral diaper bag that both my husband or I could use. My mom came over earlier in the week and surprised me with a beautiful Kate Spade bag that I mentioned liking a few weeks ago. Luckily it's black, pretty well shaped and seems to have plenty of pockets. I'm a FTM so I guess I will find out how functional it really is down the road lol. My only issue now is, it definitely looks very much like a purse and I can't see MH carrying it around! Do you ladies think it's worth it to get a second diaper bag for MH (something like a backpack) that he may be more comfortable carrying? I'm not sure if it's one of those things that seem like a good idea now, but will end up not being used and stuffed in a closet.
- Cross body strap for ease of carry - Zipper closure on main pocket - Large, lots of pockets. You won't regret getting the bigger bag. - Something you won't be embarrassed to carry around as your purse for the next year or two. DS is nearly 2 and I still carry ours most places. - Material you can wipe clean.
