Honestly, all I got out of it is this: Our system is still black and white. Our parties are still divided. And Congress is inhabited by a bunch of teenagers who want their way or the highway.
And Obama thinks everything good that has happened is thanks to him. I don't think that's true but I also disagree with anyone who blames him for everything going badly. There is a reason our system is the way that it is (so no one branch has all the power). So for one branch to take all the credit (or get all the blame) is bullshit.
I thought it was interesting the affordable care act wasn't a larger part of the address. I liked the proposal to make the childcare tax credit 3k per kid.
I thought it was rude when people started sarcastic clapping when he said he didn't have anymore campaigns to run and funny when he ad libed, I know because I won two of them to shut down the rude people.
I voted for him but have a lot of differences of opinion. All in all I think he's done well with the mess he inherited.

I thought it was awesome. I loved the emphasis on reversing some of the egregious tax breaks that are in place for the rich. I loved the part when he told Congress that if they think the average American household can live on current minimum wage, to try it. #Boom

I don't ever put much stock into them, but I watched. It usually seems like a long winded PR speech (regardless of who is in office), and without the facts to back up what he wants to do, I just don't get excited. That's not to say I wouldn't love a few of the proposals, but that's all they are at this point.

I agree, but it's just talk! Are they ever *actually* going to try it? Is he ever going to try and make them? Nope.
I feel like SAHMs always get crapped on when it comes to insurance policies and tax breaks.
Yes I thought this too with the latest tax break for two working adults.
I'm also still completely baffled at how the republicans didn't clap for (and don't support) equal pay for women. WTF?!?
I am SO not looking to get into an equal pay debate, but Republicans generally believe the wage gap is not due to actual differences in pay for the same work, but because women make less because they take part time jobs or flexible/ contract jobs with more frequency, and because they often take childbearing years off, meaning their earning potential is reduced in the long run. It all depends on how you interpret the research and how the studies are conducted. If those things are true, then legislation like the Lily Ledbetter act wouldn't make a difference because women are choosing to make less because of prioritizing other things over a paycheck. Maybe there's a way to support women who work? Maybe the answer is first world maternity policies.
Lmao! Okay first I was giggling at the poggipuss comment because "hear hear!" and then I noticed the new "love tits" change.
Anyways, I didn't watch and I don't usually like to get into politics with anybody but I'm glad everyone has kept it friendly and provided a little insight to those of us who opted out!

Fair enough, but he wouldn't waste time even TRYING to get Congress to drop their own pay to $15K / year... What WAS important about his point is that it's not that often that really rich and powerful people tell other rich and powerful people that it's almost impossible being a poor and powerless person. It was a very Elizabeth Warren-ish thing to say.

I only watched a little bit before I went to sleep. I don't agree with much either major party has to say anymore; both of them have acted like spoiled children who refuse to compromise.
I always feel like the SOTU is a very politicized, PR moment (no matter who is in office). I did read some of the fact checking this morning. I will mostly reserve judgment until the proposed budget comes out. I agree with the idea behind some of what was said, but, in reality, how in the world will we pay for those things? And other things- like equal pay- will not be resolved through additional legislation.

Because I clearly have completely different views about our president and you're right I should have just skipped over this. I apologize.
As far as I can tell, there are people in here who have all ranges of love or dislike for the guy. And seriously? This really bugs me. You seriously think we are that immature and petty that we can't have an adult conversation about differing opinions?

I didn't watch it, but I read some reviews later. I actually really liked the quote of "if you think you can live off of it, try it." Of course Congress never would, but the point is pretty valid. I heard that there was some rudeness like people looking at their smartphones and that makes me sad. You can feel how you want about the President, but he is the President and you should at least give him respect if you are attending a speech being given by him. It just feels like common courtesy to me.

I didn't watch but you ladies are catching me up to speed! I usually like to catch SOTU addresses no matter who is in office to stay well educated on what is going on so I am bummed I missed it and bummed I don't know enough to weigh in with you ladies!
I'm Canadian but I watched a fair bit of it. I think there were some great ideas but I can't help wonder how they plan to fund all these wonderful things like two years of free community college...
Community and public college used to be fairly low cost here. It's been rising and there is less public funding for education.
It would be lovely to have 2 free years but I agree with you.

It sounds like he wants to tax the rich more to cover some of this stuff. Idk how I feel about free community college.
I LOVE the idea of free public university in general. France does it this way and it works well. You need certain grades to get in and certain grades to continue. It REALLY motivates kids to do well in school and creates great habits in life (respecting the teacher, doing your work, not being lazy, etc). But we have a much higher population than France so idk how feasible something like that would be here. Kids are just NOT motivated here and it pisses me off (especially as a teacher).
The problem with our economic system is too many people are taking and not enough are putting in. Because of cultural shifts in the past few decades, we are creating a very top heavy society. Plus the lack of jobs and, let's face it, lack of motivation, we also have a class of people who just want to live off the system. We need a system that builds people up, not enables them and/or brings them down.
Because I clearly have completely different views about our president and you're right I should have just skipped over this. I apologize.

No, I don't think that but I'm also not up for a debate/long discussion. Like I said, I shouldn't have even posted. I'm not worried about anyone else being immature or not being able to have an adult conversation. I personally can't talk about this guy without getting ticked off. Hence the reason I really should have just kept my opinions to myself.
I think the guy is a complete idiot that should never have gotten voted in. I don't think he's "cleaned up" a mess at all. He's tried to put off blame when he should have taken it and tried to take credit for things he didn't deserve. I think we need to stand with Israel instead of going against them. (Thankful Boehner just recently asked for a meeting with Netanyahu to figure out a plan against Iran's tactics)
His "we shouldn't drill" stance obviously got us these low gas prices. I think him saying he's going to go around congress to make decisions is ridiculous and he should have been impeached a long time ago. There are several issues I have with him and it bothers me that he's pulled the wool over some people's eyes.
