I have put a call in with our pediatrician but wanted some real mom advice and experience.
DS has been sick with colds off and on since Christmas. Now he's got a chesty cough. Sometimes he will take a few quick breathes before coughing and wakes up multiple times a night coughing and choking.
Has anyone else experienced the breathing thing? And what else can I do besides humidifier for his cough?
DD had this in December. It's pretty terrifying. You can try steam. Turn your shower on to as hot as possible and sit in the bathroom with the doors closed. It will help clear out sinuses.
We ended up having to take her in, and they gave us prednisone to help with the swelling of her nasal passages.

Hope that helps! And hugs!
Thanks. His coughing woke him up and now he's a ball of energy. I'm looking at a loooong night. And by myself since DH is out of town. Ugh!
if he's waking up at night X several nights, I'd check with the doctor. Prednisone and/or albuterol would probably help. In an adult, I'd probably recommend lots of fluids, humidifier, an antihistamine, and an albuterol inhaler. Oh turn off the fan too.
But at this age, they are too young for otc antihistamines without doctor approval and an inhaler requires a doctors visit (would probably need a nebulizer for an infant).
We are always dealing with coughs and colds. Our pedi pretty much won't give him meds unless it's in his lungs- which is impossible to tell. He's even been wheezing before and they said his lungs were clear and it would pass. But you just don't know without taking them in. They did say if baby was struggling to breathe, lethargic, or their stomach sucked in with the breath, to bring him. We do the humidifier and Vicks on his feet.

We had this scenario in October and again this week. DS ended up on a nebulizer in October because of the choking. Like others said, there's not much they can do besides humidifier, Vicks, and steam. This week, DS and I have been sleeping on a recliner with him sitting up in my lap, both my hands around him, slightly reclined when he has coughing fits. It's not ideal but gets us through the coughing fits, then he's back to the crib until the next fit.
We've had a couple serious episodes with DS. He had bronchiolitis over thanksgiving and pneumonia over Christmas. Both times meant wheezy breathing and a deep chest cough. Both times we were told to keep up with the cool mist humidifier, clean out his nose using saline and suction every couple hours, and give it time. They didn't prescribe meds either time. Doctor told us it was worse for us to hear than DS to deal with.

We have the same problem since Christmas weekend. Just when I think we get rid of it it starts again. Just like at her 2 am feed she coughed so much and threw up snot which oddly I was happy about bc she always feels better after coughing some out. I feel so bad for her though. I feel your pain. Last time she had this cough i. Took her to the dr knowing they would not do anything and was told she had croup. I asked when to know that a cough is worth coming in for and he just told me when they have problems breathing then it is important.
Like other people said, humidifier, hot steamy bathroom, and prop up the mattress (we put pillows under it). Hope he feels better soon and that your pedi has some advice!
Oh.... And prop up the one side of the crib mattress so baby isn't completely flat...... IF baby doesn't turn circles in their sleep.
This , J has a bad cold right now I rolled a towel and blanket under one end. Seems to have helped her sleep. Last night she did get upside down and started coughing hard, I went in and moved her the right way on the incline and she immediately went into a peaceful sleep.
