Team green turned blue for me!
Abram Benjamin was born 5-17 (40w+2) at 5:22am in a wheelchair in the hospital corridor!
After almost 2 weeks of prodromal labor, things seemed to pick up on Saturday morning. I woke up around 3am with some pretty serious contractions. They kept up all day and were feeling more uncomfortable by 4pm and were around 2 minutes long, 4 minutes apart so I called my doula, Julie, to come over. I was having difficulty really focusing on them with my older children in and out of the room so we decided to go ahead into the hospital to get checked and see what was going on.
When we got there, I was only 3cm and my contractions had slowed to 6-7 minutes apart. So we were told to go get some food and walk for a few hours. We went to a park and walked and walked and walked and by the time we left my contractions were feeling a lot more serious so I thought they had to be doing something.
Nope. I was barely 4 cm when we got back to the hospital. Needless to say I was feeling very defeated. I had already felt emotional all day because I was FINALLY going to meet this baby and now they were sending me back home. But my midwife knew I wouldn't be able to rest well with the way things were going so she prescribed therapeutic rest. She said that 80% of women will wake up from it in real active labor. So we talked it over with Julie and agreed to get a shot of morphine and phenergan and have everyone go home and get some rest.
Went to bed around 9:30pm and woke up at 1:45 with very strong contractions. But they were 10-12 minutes apart. I wanted to cry because I just knew I was one of those poor women it didn't work on and I would be pregnant for another week or more. I stayed in bed and moaned through the waves I was having and finally got up around 4am to go to the bathroom.
And had 4 contractions right on top of each other. And they kept coming. So we called Julie to come back. I got in the bath tub to deal with the contractions and was still in there when Julie arrived. She helped me work through two more contractions before my water broke. I threw up right after that and we agreed it was definitely time to head back to the hospital.
As I was walking to the car, I had a really strong contractions and started feeling pressure and a urge to push. Julie coached me through it and helped me take light breaths so we could avoid having the baby right there. We loaded up into the cars and sped to the hospital. I was feeling so much pressure the whole time.
My midwife met us at the car with a wheelchair and she hurried me into it and everybody ran to get inside. We got up the elevator and halfway down the corridor to a delivery room before I yelled that the baby was coming out.
Everyone stopped, nurses swarmed us, my midwife kneeled down in front of me, and coached me through a good push and the head was coming out. I did some light breathing to slow down a bit, then one more good push and the baby was fully delivered.
I reached down for my baby, looked and said, “You’re a boy! I knew you were a boy!” He was perfect.
We got some warm towels on us then finished being pushed to an actual delivery room, got into a bed where I delivered the after birth. My uterus had some issues contracting because everything happened so fast so I got a shot of pitocin and some painful fundal massage. That cleared everything up and by an hour post birth, we were totally fine.
Abram was 7 lbs 14 oz and 19.5 in.
Yesterday was a bit rough because he failed his critical congenital heart defect (CCHD) screen three times and also failed the follow up blood pressure tests. He had an echocardiogram yesterday afternoon that went well. We were hoping to go home but had to stay another night because we were waiting for the cardiologist to come discuss the results. I was pretty emotional about it because it was scary and I was really missing my other kids!
So at 4:30 this morning our amazing nurse came back to do the heart screen again and Abram passed this time! The problem was probably that he was too young at the time of the original screenings and just needed a little extra time to adjust to life outside of mama. We talked to the pediatric cardiologist and he said the echo looked completely normal and we got to come home!
Here he is!
