A BP of 162/109 is totally normal, right? Our L&D trip....

I had a normal OB appointment yesterday (37w4d).  When they checked my BP, it was a little high, around 135/89.  Nothing to be too concerned about though.  

While I was waiting for my dr, I started seeing bright flashing dots.  It happened twice.  When my dr came in, I told her.  She did my exam (still at fingertip dilated, 50% effaced, -1 station).  She then said, let's check your BP one more time.  It had risen to 142/92.  I also by this point was feeling a little flush and light headed.  

She sent me over to L&D.  By the time I got there and got back into a monitoring bed, my BP had risen to 162/109.  So, you know, that's not the greatest.  

They had me flip onto my left side, had me drink a bunch of water.  They also took a urine sample and some blood work.  

Well, they kept us there for monitoring for about 2 hours.  BP eventually went back down to my normal (127/77) and stayed that way.  All my labs came back just fine.  So they sent us home.  They don't know why my BP rose so high, but I am now officially on maternity leave and I have been told to rest as much as possible.  

So, I guess I should probably get around to packing mine and DH hospital bags, right?

Oh no! Glad everything is fine but sorry for the scare. Is it possible your BP raised from being at the doctors? Some people get anxiety and it raises it, so I've heard. (I still need to pack my bag too...DH has been getting on me about it)

I have no idea. I wasn't stressed about the DR appointment. I wasn't even that worried about having to go over to L&D. No clue. I have a little BP wrist cuff at home, so I'm going to be monitoring myself for the next few days, just to make sure everything stays the way it should.

Oh yuck, sorry you had a little scare there! Hope the BP calms down and you're able to rest a little now. I've had BP issues too, and weirdly my best reading recently was the day I was most stressed! Bodies are so weird that way. FX for a quiet few more weeks until your LO debuts.

Are they having you do a 24 hour urine catch? There are a lot of red flags in your post, and I was induced for much less last time around. You've been having swelling too, right?

Without giving away too much info, are you at "the hospital by the coast"? I really really really disliked their procedures during my SIL's L&D, so I'd be more proactive if I were giving birth there.

I'm glad it went back down while you were there, that must have been scary for a moment.... and yes rest up and then pack your bags tonight, baby could decide to come at any moment!

I hope that high BP was just a one off. Possibly you found the environment stressful? Take it easy and do all the relaxing stuff

I'm sorry you had to go through that. Put those feet up and partake in a little R&R!

I'm a whitecoat anxiety sufferer so sometimes I get spikes at the doctor, especially if I was really nervous or stressed going in.

It really irritates me when doctors dont take this kind of stuff seriously enough. Please monitor yourself carefully and if i were you i would still say something about doing a urine catch at your next OB appt (hoping you go weekly since you just had one)

How scary! I hope the high BP reading was just a fluke. Take care of yourself and get as much rest as possible.

My doctor had me monitor my blood pressure the duration of my pregnancy. Toward the end, it started creeping up to the 140s/90s. My doctor specifically told me if I get a reading where the top number is above 160 or the bottom number is above 100, to go to labor and delivery for monitoring. When blood pressures get that high, it can affect the umbilical cord and the nutrition and such going to the baby. It can also affect you...especially since you were seeing spots. That's one of the things they kept asking me when I was on hospital arrest. When my BP was high, they asked if I had a headache or was seeing spots. A few days later, my BP was consistenly 150s/90s, and the next day, we got a few 160s/100s readings. That's when they decided to deliver my little one that day. The risk of keeping her in was too great to both of our healths.

I'm sorry if I come across as being paranoid or scary. Blood pressure is not something you mess with. And just going through some scary moments myself in the last few weeks, I am especially sensitive to this subject. Monitor it, and if you feel off or bad for any reason, call your doctor and go in. It's not worth the risk.

Very scary stuff! I'm glad you are home but also concerned they aren't having you do the urine catch. Monitoring your BP on your own sounds like a smart idea.
