First, I want to thank you ladies for giving me a place to hang out for the last month. I lurked a lot, posted a little, trying to wrap my head around the idea of having twins. Well, after the NT scan yesterday, it seems I don't go here anymore! (NOT a loss)
Long story short, it doesn't seem that there were ever 2 babies in there. The ultrasound tech at the MFM's office offered an explanation that makes a lot of sense: sometimes a part of the umbilical cord can be seen behind the baby, and if there were a shadow, it could look like it wasn't attached, leading to the speculation of another fetus. If you take a doppler reading of the cord, there would be a pulse, thus explaining why they documented "2 fetal heart rates".
On the plus side, we are not dealing with a fetal demise or loss. All we've lost is the "idea" of twins. While I may have felt disappointed at first, now I actually feel a sense of relief. While the adventure of multiples was an exciting prospect, we are just as happy to share that we have ONE healthy baby, growing right on track.
So thank you again for my short stay here. I wish all of you the best in your pregnancies and beyond with your multiples!
Wow! That's really interesting! I'm sure those are some crazy feelings to sort out, but I'm glad it isn't a loss. I hope the rest of your pregnancy is very uneventful.
