We have that seat (currently in storage) and I couldn't even tell you if it touched the back of the chair. I remember it was very simple to install so I'm assuming you're fine.
I honestly wouldn't even know. I always had it on the top of the table so she was at my eye level and easier to feed. Then when she got big enough where her feet were touching the table we moved her to a booster seat on the kitchen chairs. I attempted to use the space saver instead of buying a booster, but my table has a ledge that kept it from moving close enough to the table where we could use without a tray. Something else to consider maybe. Otherwise I loved it!!
I would guess it wouldn't touch the back unleess it was reclined all the way. There is an extender out from the base that would fit inside the inset of the chair rungs if that makes sense. There is the normal base and then an oval extra piece.

The back of the highchair doesn't touch the chair, but the base of the highchair does touch the back of the chair. This way the highchair has room to recline.
