Here's one. I am okay with the 5% or so of people that are taking advantage of social programs when they don't really need them if that means that the 95% of people that do need them are getting help. Honestly, the person "getting the best of you hard working people" using food stamps and driving an Escalade are not the norm. I wish our programs encouraged a method off of them or community betterment in return for food stamps/welfare.
UO: If you say 'I don't want TV' because you don't physically own a television set, but it comes out that you watch shows on Amazon/Netflix/torrent/whatever, then I kind of think you are being more than a little pedantic. You watch TV, you just don't watch it on a television. Doesn't mean you're somehow above us cable/dish havers in any way. We're both still watching Scandal.
Also, I don't think the punishment for shoplifting is death. It's the part of any 'well, he broke the law' argument that gets to me. Jaywalkers break the law, they shouldn't be gunned down for it.
I feel like this BMB is a little more conservative that the other boards I've been on/frequent, so I'm going to try to be cool and watch my bleeding-heart liberal self. Right now, because I'm tired, we're not going to agree, and arguing on the computer screen can give me a headache. Get me into second tri, then I'll be better at it.

I can agree with you on that. Situations like that escalate and can get out of hand really quickly. Mostly what pisses me off is the way things were handled after the fact. Go ahead and protest, that's your right as an American citizen. Don't be stupid about it: looting, killing people, setting things on fire, etc.
I don't like that a guy died for a petty crime. But I also don't like the culture shift to the disrespect of law enforcement. It scares me to think of a world where authority isn't respected.
It also scares me to think of a world where authority isn't questioned. We have a duty to challenge authority. We can still respect individual officers and appreciate them for their work, but if we don't take a hard look at a system that seems so obviously broken and skewed - we fall deeper down into a rabbit hole of distrust and "disrespect." I don't think anyone condones a violent protest, but when you perceive that a system has failed, what other means do you have except for the extralegal?
ETA: Obvs, it took me a little while to compose some thoughts on the issue. Not trying to pile on. And when I talk about a broken system, I'm thinking of the Cleveland police dept. as Exhibit A.
Well, let's light it up. UO: I don't understand a need to respect a person simply based on the job they have chosen to do. And I say that as the wife of a military officer who will also straight up tell you that just because of what he does, that doesn't mean an instant air of authority or that anyone who does that job is worthy of respect. There are great cops, and there are terrible ones.
I can respect laws, or at least obey them, and still believe that there are major, major problems with our criminal justice system and that such things as systemic racism and poverty exist.
Also, I believe in Skittles for poor people (old Bump phrase)and I think 'bootstraps' is a ridiculous line of thought.
I agree there are some real dips-shits in every line of work but I do feel that military, cops, fire fighters, etc. that are in the line of danger for work should be given the benefit of the doubt initially BUT due diligence should be done and they should be punished just as citizens for any crime.
In regards to camping. It's not camping if you are sitting in an RV with heat or AC while you plug into the internet and watch cable TV.
Why can't it be camping? I'm near enough to the outdoors! I used to camp a lot as a kid in Cali. Now that I live in Texas, it's too damn hot. Now, whenever possible we rent a little cabana. There's not usually a/c, but at least we can plug a fan in.
I don't know. I think in order for it to be camping you need to be in a tent sleeping on the hard ground. And no electricity either. I think that's true camping.

I noticed during the last bumpwide UO/FFFC that BMB in general are much more conservative than the other boards on the dump (and here now) at least TTGP and parenting.
Should save this for FFFC because I know it has sparked a lot of controversy: I (along with grand juries and judges) don't think Darren Wilson should be indicted for murder. I also don't believe it is as big of a race issue as people have made it out to be. A cop is there to serve and protect and arrest the people who are breaking the law. Michael Brown broke the law and then resisted arrest. Its not a hate crime, it's a guy doing his job.
Not just you. I feel the same way. Especially after you hear that Mr. Brown punched that cop not once, not twice, but three times in the face and then went for the cops gun. I am sorry. Breaking the law is not a race issue, it is a I have no common sense or respect issue. I don't care what race you are but if you break the law, then expect a cop to do his job. If you then threaten said cop, expect him/her to react. I agree that cops don't have to automatically shoot or become violent but the second the suspect threatens their life, they have every right to protect themselves as they see fit. They are the ones putting their lives at risk on a daily basis.
I could give 2 flying fucks if your a purple people eater, polka dotted, green, white, black or look like a skittles bag. You come after an officers gun (or mine) your going down holey or I will die trying.
On the gender topic I so want girls or one of each. I really think I won't know what to do if I have 2 boys. We are not a organized sports family at all.
I too can't stand cats. Loved my in laws cats but thought they were dogs. The rest are evil. (Takes cover).
My UO: (really takes cover and locks door). Showing is showing. YES IT'S NOT BABY. Thought I was super bloated but at my US today the tech told me baby A is behind Baby B and my uterus is extra high? So I guess it's not as much bloat as I thought. (Peeks out to see if it's safe).

How about I call it 'camping lite' or 'feux camping'?
First, I'm very far in the left camp. So what's up to my liberal ladies! Except gun rights, which I can't understand how that ended up on the "other side" anyway. I'm basically like.... Let us make our own decisions, and let's help our poor.
Another big UO for me: NOT doing/watching/reading something because it's trendy is just as bad as only doing it because it's trendy. I don't feel like finding that post and tagging.

1. Cats are alright, but mainly just ok. Although cat gifs = winning.
2. Tent camping is the shit. My husband and I did this for 2 weeks across America last summer.
3. I say excessive force is not the issue with the police. I think the issue is that people think the street is the place to argue their innocence. Our judicial system doesn't work that way. The cop arrests you THEN you have your day in court. People shouldn't be resisting arrest. They should go quietly and fight it in court they way the law was written.
As for my UO: I really want to try cloth diapering because I think it's a nice way to protect our environment (aka not filling the landfills. I know it uses water and electricity). But this opinion is unpopular with my husband and his mom soooooo yea. I gotta decide how worth it cloth diapering is.

Glamping all the way. I don't even care. Phyllis Nefler is my spirit animal.

My (unrelated) UO is: I don't care if it's just bloat and my baby is still the size of a small fruit, I have a BELLY. I have been taking a probiotic and eating yogurt daily, so suffice to say my bowel movements are just FIIINE, I've been watching my sodium intake for water retention, I've even been walking the stupid dog nightly, rain or shine. And ya know what? The rubberband trick isn't even working on my pants anymore. This belly is so outta control, not only did the ultrasound tech say "are you sure you're only 9 weeks along?" a few weeks back at our first U/S, My midwife exclaimed "My! Well look at you! You're wasting no time in getting that uterus stretched out, are you??" And then likened me to a stretched out balloon ("you see, the first time you blow up a balloon, it's difficult. Though it goes back to the same size after deflation, it much easier to blow up the next time around!") Um, thanks. I'm a fucking balloon. I'm already in maternity pants. I haven't told my bosses yet since there is a very real chance that I won't have a job to come back to (I'm the only employee, so no FMLA for me) and I would really like to delay that awkward conversation for as long as possible... Yeah, it's blindingly obvious that I'm carryin' nowadays. I honestly am carrying around the same size belly I did when I was about 4-5 months along my last pregnancy. And it's bullshit!
My post got eaten Here it is again: UO: I hate when people compare the animals to human babies. Just no. Not even close. Don't tell me about how you were up all night with your sick puppies when I tell you I was up all night with my sick toddler. It's not even the same.
OMG I love you, go watch this. Seriously the funniest "having a dog totally prepares you for a baby" video I have ever seen.

Bleeding heart checking in. The other board I post on is less left than me, but still really left compared to the US, and this board so far.

Sure, but you also have a right to resist an unlawful arrest. An illegal arrest is - in itself - an assault and battery. An illegal arrest is injury in itself.

Another liberal here. I completely agree with your first statement. I know a lot of police officers, fireman, EMTs, doctors, etc. To me, a uniform =/= instant respect from me.

Resisting arrest is not a death sentence crime, it is actually not even a crime everywhere. Jaywalking is also not a death sentence crime, or even an arresting crime. Police should be trained to handle a person resisting arrest without killing them. They work with disabled citizens and drugged/drunk citizens all the time, they need to learn how to handle it without killing someone.
Also cops need to have a reason to arrest you. So yes, excessive force can start with attempting to arrest or search without a reason. The NYC law that allowed random searches of people was ruled unconstutional.

I'm conservative, but more socialist than I would like to admit. It hurts my heart how broken the world is and there aren't solutions to fix everything.

Totally agreed deadly force is not always needed. However punching a cop while resisting isn't acceptable either. For what it's worth the most recent death regarding the choke hold incident was with a person with prior arrests. This wasn't a law abiding citizen minding their own business never ever doing anything illegal. Again death wasn't deserved, but seems to have seen a side effect of the resisting.
I think we, as a society, need to find a balance between healthy respect for authority and standing up for ourselves.

Of course an illegal arrest is wrong, but are you really gonna get anywhere with that on the street with the cop? If the cop is actively trying to arrest you they are not going to suddenly change their mind. It's better to verbalize your disagreement with the cop and if they pursue, fight it in the judicial system.

Yeah, I was a little taken back by the MW balloon comment at first, but seriously, I feel like an effing balloon so.. She's got a point. And the ultrasound tech was more of a lighthearted joke because we were off on the dating by 6 days from my LMP vs. how big the baby was measuring... The MW did the dildo cam in the exam room, and then ended up sending us for a "stat" ultrasound with an actual tech to verify that her measurements were correct since the dates were so far off.
I'm sincerely hoping this NOT an UO but I wouldn't dare say it on social media...
A girl I know was DYING to have her baby "any day now". Like, would do whatever it takes, she said. She's just turned 36 weeks and is supposedly at the hospital now having the kiddo.
I'm judging the living heck out of her. Even at 36 weeks, a baby can still suffer some very real underdevelopment issues. I fully know what it's like to be at the end and be ready for your baby to come but I just can't deal with her selfishness.

Edited: bc mobile sucks for quick finger
Agree to disagree. It seems to me that if an unlawful arrest is an injury in itself, it's strange to ask someone to submit to injury at the hands of authority - voicing feigned, polite dissent - in the hopes that another source of authority will free you and vindicate your rights. And now you've been injured - so what? Do you file a lawsuit against the city? Because the injury happened - you sustained it. Belated freedom doesn't help. And what if it happens again? And again?
It seems more sensible (and just) to train police to handle these situations than to force ordinary citizens to make these impossible decisions.

Actually, you do not have the "right" to resist what you believe is an illegal arrest. SOTU has upheld that several times precisely to avoid these situations.
As a cop, 98% of the people I arrest think I'm "illegally arresting" them. No one ever wants to believe they're wrong. Guess what? They are. I've been injured far more times from folks resisting arrest than I've ever injured other folks. But I'll do what it takes to carry out my lawful duties. I don't have the luxury of walking away.
Also there's no such thing as an "unarmed" person when you are an armed LEO. As many officers have found out the hard way, your gun can always be taken from you, and a person can kill with their bare hands. I've seen it done, and I've been in those situations. Using any sort of force is never an easy decision, but keeping peace & order can be violent. Hard truth, as unpopular as it may be. If you've been lucky enough to live a life where violence hasn't touched you directly, I envy you. But it's not a universal reality. I still try to make it one though.
