... please come in and share details.   My doc is probably going to strip mine at my appointment next Tuesday morning. I'm 3.5cm/80% and baby is just a touch lower than zero station.  I know it's no guarantee of labor starting, even under those circumstances, and am just curious what others experienced who have had it done in the past.  I'm sure I'm not the only one.

1.   How far along were you when it was done?

2.  How far dilated/effaced were you at the time?

3.   What was baby's positioning, if you know it?

4.  If it worked, how long was it before you went into active labor?

2. How far dilated/effaced were you at the time? Hardly. Both times dilation was "fingertip" so they barely could even reach it and effaced about 40%. (I had to look this stuff up, good thing I e-mailed my mom about it! ha.) Not comfortable to have done but not the worst. Also quick.

3. What was baby's positioning, if you know it? Vertex, so normal.

4. If it worked, how long was it before you went into active labor? Didn't work, sorry. But you're definitely far more dilated and effaced than I was so FX for you!

Details are fuzzy, I had it done several times, starting at 39 weeks. The third time was at 41 weeks, 3 days, baby was born the next day. At that point it seemed to get things started but the previous 2 times yielded not even a contraction.

Also, after the 3rd time I started taking blue and black cohosh and it seemed that and the membrane stripping did the trick. That, and I was 10 days past my due date so likely nature was doing it's thing by then anyway.

With DS I had it done at 38 weeks 39 weeks and 2x at 40 weeks. I ended up being induced. I was at least 1 cm and 50% effaced when it was done. I don't know what his station wad. It wasn't painful but didn't really get labor going.

I think since you're progressing so much already that it may help push you over the edge. My OB plans to do it next Tuesday as well.

I have had it done with each of my pregnancies.

DD: 38 weeks and 39 weeks, DS: 37 weeks and again at 38 weeks, this time 37 weeks and will do it each week until the baby comes.

2. How far dilated/effaced were you at the time? DD: 2-3cm 50%, DS: 3.5cm 60%, this time 3.5 50%.

3. What was baby's positioning, if you know it? Each time the babies have been engaged and in a good position.

4. If it worked, how long was it before you went into active labor? I ended up being induced both times. We are hoping to avoid induction this time so that is why we started stripping membranes at 37 weeks and will continue to do so. I have been having prodromal labor almost every night for the past 2 weeks so I'm hoping the next strip will push me over the edge.

Lurking from July 2015 - hi ladies Figured I'd creep out and answer since it did work for me.

4. If it worked, how long was it before you went into active labor? The OB stripped my membranes (without me requesting it or without my consent, grrrr, at noon and my son was born within 18 hours. I went into labor 10 hours after he did it. I immediately felt crampy and a little ill after he did it. It was painful - probably because I wasn't prepared for it at all.

Had mine done with both girls...

1. DD1 - 38w2d
DD2 - 39w3d

2. DD1 - 3cm 70%
DD2 - 1.5 cm 70%

3. Both head down, but wasn't told a station with either, but both were still pretty high I think.

4. DD1 - approx 36 hours after sweep my water broke. I had been having contractions all day, but not timing them, so it's quite possible they were regular before water breaking.

DD2 - headed to hospital with contractions 5 min apart lasting a minute approx 20 hours after sweep.

ETA: I will ask my doctor to do it at my appt on 6/4 (a day shy of 39w) if baby doesn't come before then. Hoping for similar results again.

Same thing happened to me! No warning, no discussion, no nothing. I have a new doc this time!

1- with my last two pregnancies, I was 39 weeks.

2- I was only dilated at 1 cm with my first, 3 cm with my second- both times I was about 50% effaced

3- head down both times

4- with my first, it did nothing... But with my second, I started my bloody show for 5 days and contractions started 2 days later and lasted for 2 days until labor began. So I am going with the idea that it didn't work both times for me. I won't be doing it this time because I'm 0% effaced, and 1/2 cm... And I'm 38.5 weeks.... Boo.

But I do know a few friends who it worked for immediately!! So I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it works!

Looking back, a few hours. I was expecting the horrible pains and that wasn't how I labored. I got crampy within 10 minutes though. But real contractions took a few hours

My doctor felt I was going to start labor anyway, and had some other concerns; normally she would have encouraged other patients to rest and try to make it a few more days/weeks.

I also found it was not uncomfortable which could be due to my body prepping for labor on its own and not needing as much assistance as some seem to.

Had it done with my last baby.

1) Was done at 40 weeks.
2) Probably only 1/80% or something like that.
3) Head down, posterior
4) Didn't work.  Was induced a week later.  I am still going to try it this time around starting probably 39 weeks.  I definitely believe it can help if you are ready.

Even though it didn't work, I will still probably ask to have it done this time if I'm due and facing an induction. Can't hurt, right?
