Neosure 22 cal formula and painful gas/constipation

Hi ladies,

My son was born at 33 weeks and has been on fortified breast milk (fortified to 24 cal on Neosure 22 cal formula).  He's now 8 weeks old and has gained wonderfully!  He was born at 3lb 15oz and at his weight check this Tuesday was 7lb 13oz.  So he has nearly doubled his birth weight!  This past week we have noticed that he arches his back/cries and screams/pulls off the bottle during some of his feeds.  He also seems to be super gassy but unable to pass it.  We have tried gripe water and are starting gas drops today.  He also has failed to have BM today and prior to this week he would have 3-5 decently sized BMs per day.   

We have tried a few bottles of just breast milk to see if that helps with his gas (we will continue just Breast milk for the remainder of the day and see what happens).  He has had fewer episodes of arching/spitting/screaming since making this change early today.  It's still too early to draw any conclusions and we have our 2 month appointment with his pedi on Tuesday.

Has anyone else experienced similar symptoms with their little ones on Neosure?  If so, did you have to switch?  Did he/she just outgrow the issue?  Or did you add in another variable like a medication?

DS does spit up at a couple feeds per day. So far though, he hasn't spit up a breast milk only feed. Could still be coincidence at this stage.

However, I think mom going to try to do another day of just breast milk and see how he does. If his issues are resolved, I'll re-introduce fortified bottles but maybe only 2-3 in a day versus every single feed. I know he needs those extra nutrients.

When DS came home he started having the arched back/awful reflux as well as the painful gas and total inability to poop. In the end I stopped the fortifier on my own for a week and didn't see any improvement. But by then he was gaining weight like crazy on his own so we never went back on it. Sadly, we are still dealing with all the issues and I suspect it's maybe a milk/soy intolerance so I'm on an elimination diet for now.

Ouch! Good luck with your elimination dirt, I hope it gives you answers!


DS hasn't done any arching and screaming so far today and we have not given any fortified milk so far. Using today as an experiment won't hurt him but the one time I tried to give a fortified bottle DS took two slurps and refused. He was also dead tired so I won't count that as an accurate depiction.

If he has a good day on just breast milk today I will try to give 2 fortified bottles tomorrow and see how he does.

Yeah MY DS had the same issues as well. I ended up eliminating dairy and soy from my diet and eventually ended with alimentum. He also was on prilosec for reflux. As far as the gas, try bicycle legs to relieve it, sometimes that helped. Hang in there! Tummy troubles are the worst. My DS is 18 months now and it is definitely better, but we do still manage it by diet. He is not a happy guy if he doesn't poop at least once a day so we give him a serving a prune or pear juice each morning and that keeps him pretty regular. Good luck!
