I recently started Zoloft. It has already significantly helped my anxiety, but is giving me insomnia, especially since I increased the dose. I am suppsoed to increase again next week. I am worried that the lack of sleep is going to cancel out the emotional benefits.
Have any of you had this experience? Does it improve as your body gets used to the drug, or will it continue as long as I'm on it?
I have an appointment with my psych in 2 weeks but I don't know if I can do 2 more sleepless weeks...
I don't have experience with Zoloft, but if the insomnia is really getting to you, call your psych's office and mention it. It may get better or it might not.
How long have you been on the new dose? It will likely get better within 4-6 weeks. If you increase the dose that 4-6 weeks may restart, but likely will not be as severe. The sleeplessness is hard, but think shorter term challenge for long term payoff.
I would suggest calling your prescriber's office just to talk about the impact it is having. They may decide to make changes via phone like cut your current dose slightly and increase at a much more comfortable rate. Side effects are a given, but you shouldn't have to suffer. They can be managed to optimally get the best for your anxiety and minimize the sleep problems. But be honest. The sleep issue may be worth the anxiety benefit. Only you know the ratio your life can handle.
I've been on Zoloft before and had no real side effects I can remember. I agree that it might get better and could be your body adjusting to it. However, if it is severe enough maybe you should call instead of waiting the 2 weeks.

It varies. I know two people on Zoloft. One has had minimal side effects. The other has had no problem, but he also has a prescription for Trazadone to take at night. It helps him get at least 6-7 hours, which was more than the 2-2.5 he was getting before due to insomnia.
Have you talked to your dr? Maybe call and see if they are willing to suggest a non prescription sleep aid until you have your visit in 2 weeks.
Talking to your doc about a sleep aid is wise, but do inquire about the potential for rebound insomnia. The potential for rebound insomnia for any sleep aid taken for more than a reset (i.e. more than 3-7 days) is fairly high, unless it's natural (melatonin) or very low dose Benadryl.
Have you tried any behavioral/non-pharm options? Deep breathing, muscle relaxation, mindful meditation.
Thanks for your input everyone. I talked to the pharmacist today who recommended taking it at night instead of the morning. I'm going to try that for a week and see if it helps. If not, I'll call my psych.
