Is anyone doing this? Lo is very demanding during some solid meals and I decided to start with eat, milk, more so far. I want to do water, but thats close to eat. He doesnt have the dexterity (right meaning?) To do the sign for water (3 fingers extended and tap mouth). Im excited!
I'm doing "milk" so far. i don't think she understands yet but I want to do more of this as she gets older. LO is not yet 5 months and I've heard that six months is around when they can start to understand it but I figure early exposure can only help, I'm excited too!
I am not planning on it...mainly because I want to encourage talking. Anyone have thoughts about that? I have known some kids like my niece who did great with both, but I have also known some that knowing the signs gave them an excuse not to use words.
DS knows some and they use it at daycare. I will say, based on our experience with DS, we will try to stay away from "more" for a while. DS has been a late talker and learned the sign for "more" he uses it for everything. He will just more us until we figure out what he wants. We also had him evaluated for EI at 16 months and the evaluator mentioned that she loves baby signing but stays away from "more" because once they learn it they use it for everything. Which has been our experience, so we will try to keep away from it for a while.

From what Ive read its supposed to encourage oral language.

It's so tough. I don't think more is a bad thing. We were really excited when DS learned more, but after talking to EI specialist and realizing what she said was true (for us) we felt guilty(not that we should). I still feel like DS is behind in his speech, but not far enough behind to qualify for intervention. Also, he was an early walker, etc. so I often wonder (and tell myself) this add to it. The whole some kids focus on a certain area of development over other areas.
