I came into work to find this email from my aunt. Attached to the email is a picture of the sweetest little baby boy. My heart melted (and started racing a bit) when I read the email and saw him. We would take that baby in a heartbeat, but I don't think we could afford the legal fees of a private adoption right now. And if he goes into the DCF system, I have a feeling there would be no guarantee that he could be placed with us. However, if the aunt has temporary custody of him right now and expressed desire for him to be placed with us, do you think DCF would help arrange that?? I am going to email my SW right now and ask her advice, but I just had to share this with you all and hear your thoughts.
Here's the original email that she sent to my mom:
This baby was born in 5/31. His name is T (I don't want to give real names). His aunt works for me. His father is her brother, his mother is a homeless woman who may have substance abuse problems. In the hospital she refused to care for him. His father never came to the hospital at all. DCF was there and was going to take custody of the child. B, his aunt went before a judge and got temporary custody (30 days). She can't keep him because she has 3 small children of her own. She just didn't want him to disappear into the system. I don't know anything about private adoption, but I know that Jan had hoped for an infant who would be adoptable. This boy was pronounced in perfect health but he only weighs 5 lbs. I don't know if the next 30 days will make a difference to these parents or to DCF. I wasn't sure if I should even mention this to Jan. I want your opinion. B was desperate to save him but then was bringing him to the barn while she worked and Shelley (rightfully) told her no way was this a place for a 5 day old infant. So B may lose her job over this. Too bad because she is a great worker and has a good heart. Let me know what you think.
And here's the additional email she included when she forwarded it to me.
Scroll down and check out this tiny baby. His aunt took him because she didn't want him in the system. I don't know if a child like this would interest you. He is on DCF's radar but not yet in the system. I don't have that much information but I can get more because the aunt works for me. I am not up on the legalities of this situation, or how difficult it is to adopt by private arrangement. Anyway, your mother thought I should show him to you. He is healthy, but tiny. I am not optimistic that he will have a good life, based on what I have heard. He would be one lucky boy to have you and Shawn. Let me know what you think.
