I understand how society views sex vs. gender, but I say, whatever, because a) personally I'm not into the whole politically correct business, and b) the medical definition of gender includes sex, so......?
American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary:
gender gen·der (jěn'dər) n.
The sex of an individual, male or female, based on reproductive anatomy.
That same dictionary also says: 2. Sexual identity, especially in relation to society or culture. Another medical dictionary says: One's personal, social, and legal status as ♂ or ♀, based on body and behavior, not on genital and/or erotic criteria.
But if you're not into "the whole politically correct business" and DGAF how many marginalized members of society you offend when you incorrectly assign someone's gender, then you do you.
Is it too early to have a birth month crush? Because I call dibs on EatsRitz. Too early? LMK.
UO: Even though I know 'sex' is the correct term to use when finding out whether the baby is a boy or a girl, I still say gender because talking about my baby's sex is off putting.
Ok then. Are the words penis and vagina also off-putting?
I do use correct anatomy terms with my toddler. I heard her saying what sounded like wawa in the bathtub the other day and I asked h what she was saying. She was touching herself and saying vulva. So for me correct terminology isn't off putting.

No, I'll just use them when they're appropriate, like when I'm explaining to my child why girls are different from boys, or potty training, etc... I choose not to go around and announce that my child has a vagina or a penis, when I can just as easily say they are a boy or a girl... I am not having this conversation with some who has gender identity issues, so my laid back approach isn't offending anyone in my circle/family
I guess maybe I don't understand what's so bad about the word sex. Is it because it's a homonym with coitus? (I feel like Sheldon on BBT right now. Haha. I don't really use the word coitus in everyday conversation.)

We should totally bring the word coitus back to life.

Saying "I know the correct term is sex, but I'mma use gender anyway because I don't like the term sex for a baby/I'm not into pc stuff/I don't know anyone who is trans so it's ok" is just as bad as saying "I know the correct term is differently abled or developmentally disabled, but I'm going to use the R word instead."
That comparison may seem a bit over the top, but really they're both offensive. Continuing to use the incorrect term makes you part of the problem.

I can't wait to reply to people who ask if we are finding out the gender. "Well, it's an anatomy scan... So we found out which anatomy it had."
Also, I know too many women who dictated what push present they wanted and that bugs. TBH I will probably buy myself something, but I'm more likely to do it now. Like a KTFU present. Congrats self, on the future stretching of your vagina.

After I have a baby I just want like a glass of champagne and some tacos. But a KTFU present that I can buy myself now sounds awesome!
It's a present your SO gives you for shoving a human through your vagina.
I should have given my husband a push present after baby girl was born. He held my right leg up for 3.5 hours (with me pushing really hard against him the whole time), and witnessed the glory of birth up close and personal. I commend him. My push present to myself was my baby. No need for other BS.
I've heard of hospitals that give a steak dinner and champagne after the baby is born. I don't drink, but I would have LOVED a nice, fancy dinner after my kids were born. Not eating for over 24 hours while in labor with DD was rough. And then all I got was a cold turkey sandwich because the cafeteria was already closed.

One of the hospitals my OB delivers at does this! The other hospital has a much better NICU, though.
Meh. Yes and no. A large portion of people have really shitty diets so a prenatal/multivitamin can help supplement. But your right that if you are eating a balanced diet then you don't really need them. Folic acid has been fortified in our grain supply since 1997.
Exactly. If someone is following the Standard American Diet or suffering from nausea/vomiting that makes almost all food unappealing, wouldn't prenatal vitamins be kind of a necessity?
i'm late, but i was going to say all of these things in reply. Knowing that I was at least getting some vitamins in, especially folic acid and vitamin D3, made the terrible 1st/2nd trimester diet okay with me and my doctor.

Just one reason I give birth at home. Baby comes out, pop the enchiladas I made and froze two weeks earlier into the oven. Boom, enchiladas in my own bed.

The hospital I will deliver at offers this, but it is ridiculously expensive and depending on when you deliver it wouldn't happen until the following night. I made DH go to McDonald's after DS was born because he cafeteria was closed and I was starving. It was the best McDonald's I've ever eaten in my life.

The hospital we delivered DS at gives you the option of a dinner like this or gift cards to a restaurant. We chose the gift cards.
I agree that Gender is what's in your head, sex is what's between your legs.
But when someone says they are finding out the gender I am Not like oh let me correct them. Maybe that's my UO. I don't care when people say that.
This discussion came up many times on my other bmb and I'm over it.
Same here! Who cares if someone says sex or gender?! We know what they mean. I may say either one from to time!
A lot of transgender people care whether someone says sex or gender and it's incredibly hurtful and offensive to use the wrong term. That's why it matters.
I know I keep harping on this, but LGBT issues are kind of a big deal to me.
