I'm bawling over a letter that M's special ed teacher sent home. She has taught him for three years now. She was a relatively new teacher and he had just entered this school. He's now graduating 5th grad and moving on to middle school and out-of-district. She won't have a resource room to herself next year. There are big changes ahead for them both.
In her letter, she told us that it was our family that kept her working in this field, even when she wanted to give up. She said it was our perseverance that kept her going. That the way we advocate for the boys and make sure they get what they need served as an example for her, and that our boys are sure to succeed in life because of how we fight for them.
She told us that she has watched M grow so much. That there were so many times he could have given up, but instead, he fought on, and as a result, achieved things we never expected. She said that she was sure he will mature into a responsible teen and his personality will lead him to success in life.
Guys, you have no idea how much this means to me. After all our struggles with his education, to read those words. She, along with another teacher, was the one to clue us in that his initial IEP wasn't providing nearly enough services. She was the one who was forced to write an affidavit against her will, to be used against us in our due process case (the school never used it). And she was the one to work tirelessly with him, day in and day out, when it seemed he just wasn't going to absorb anything more.
We were so lucky to have her in our lives. And now I'm crying, all over again.

That is a beautiful letter. I'm so glad she shared her feelings with you, and that you were able to have a mutually satisfying relationship and impact upon one another. I hope you can keep in touch with her and that she will continue in her field, since it sounds like she's one of the good ones.
