We just got back from DD's checkup. All went well, we got the same advice as doglover31 about 3 meals a day plus 2 snacks. When I mentioned I thought BM or formula before solids, she shrugged that right off and said basically not at this age. I'm confused, is my pedi just not BF friendly or am I missing something? Everywhere I read, its all about BM or formula till 12 months old for main source of nutrition and solids for fun. Maybe I should post on BF board, am I overthinking this? If I fed DD that much solids she would barely drink a sip of milk. I also was told to stop nursing her all night long when she wakes. (yes I know this but so much easier said than done, do you want to come deal with her at 3:00am? LOL)
She is doing great on her curves and overall healthy so that is all that matters!
@adulruna, I know, that is what I thought about BF. Your right, I'm sure I will just continue nursing her all night long and complain about no sleep, LOL

DS had his 9 month appointment on Monday. His pediatrician still told us that breast milk right now is best. But he also gave us a hand out that said DS should have 3 meals and 2 snacks...so we have been trying to do 3 meals. I don't know how to fit the snacks in.
The doc also said that we could start stage 3 foods. I told him that we make our own food and have just been giving DS what we eat when he's not having a puree we made. He said that was fine and was impressed DS could handle solid foods so well.
Stats: Height: 29 1/2 inches (83%) Weight: 21 pounds 1 oz ( I think that was 73%) And I don't remember his head circumference off hand. I know its in like the 95-98% range.
It might be fun to include birth stats DS' weight at birth: 9lbs 1oz DS' length at birth: 20 inches

jt2378, I didn't even bring up his sleep habits. I figured he was going to tell me that he should be sleeping longer and I didn't want to have that battle.

Oh also, we discussed cow's milk. The doctor was firm with not starting until 1 year (which I expected) and also said that at one year to stop bottles completely. That he should start with a sippy cup.

I am so mad at the sleep thing though. We were getting 5 hour stretches and then he was down for 2 more hours after that and this past week he's been up every two hours. He is awful at bedtime too. I would side nurse him and then put him in the crib no issue. Now, he wants to nurse but i need to be sitting down and my back is killing me. Then when we move him back to the bed after his first wakeup he keeps sitting down still asleep or he'll go on all fours and rock front to back for a bit, falls asleep and then starts all over. He hit his head with the wall the other day from the rocking. It's funny now but at 4 in the morning it's frustrating.
This sounds a lot like us. If DS is having a good night he will sleep from 7-12. Then every 2 hours after that. But lately he's been every 2 hours. I'm so sleepy!

Ya that would be super frustrating! We haven't had 5 hour stretches for the most part since she was 8 weeks old! She is also sitting up in the crib but just getting pissed and not falling back asleep. She is great at naps, wakes up fine, plays for awhile but nighttime comes and all hells breaks loose!

This is really interesting! Did he say why?
He said it would be the easiest way to transition. If we are going to stop BF and giving bottles of breast milk then we should start with sippy cups of cows milk. He also said it isn't good for their teeth to continue on a bottle.
I think I agree with him more on the transition part then the teeth part. I don't think a few extra months on the bottle would really harm DS' teeth. But I'm also not a dental expert.

Thanks for sharing your DS' stats, sounds like he is doing great also!!!
Birth stats was a great idea too! DD was 6lbs, 14oz and 20 inches long

Your LO is growing great!
doglover31, YUP should have just kept my mouth shut because now I feel frustrated about the whole situation and feel like I'm a bad mom or something...(I know that sounds foolish)

Yes they all get like this about the bottle, its like their teeth won't rot out of their mouth if they have a bottle a couple months past 12 months!
Oh and BTW ladies, she suggested I give DD a sippy cup or bottle with some water in it when she wakes up screaming like a banshee! Because that will go over well and I'm sure she will take that after having boob for the last 9 months!

jt2378, my ped said that breastmilk and/or formula is still the main source of nutrients but if she starts dropping off feedings it is because of solids and it was ok. As long as they're growing and gaining weight it doesn't really matter. Also that separation anxiety is kicking in, so even if LO was a good sleeper before she might start waking up again.
His growth is on the same track it's been on. Still small but growing proportionately. He's my little peanut. Lol.
He said he looks great. He gave us a name for an eye specialist to make an appointment for his clogged duct. He said it's still possible that it will just clear up one day, so not to lose hope, but make the appointment now because there's only a small window that they will do any procedure.
As for feeding he said he just wants to see a "well balanced week" meaning if one day is heavier in fruits, make sure the next day you have more vegetables, etc. He said by 1 year he should be to 3 meals a day.
He also said the sippy cup is a must at all meals now. He said in the hot weather they can definitely use the extra liquids. He also said to mix up what you put in it so they don't just associate drinking with one thing and then reject any new liquid later. (ie milk, water, diluted juice if they are backed up.)

I am loving seeing how everyone's LO's are doing. DS's appt next Wed. I am curious to see what his stats are. I was curious about how much water to give him...I just started giving him a sippy cup with water in it, but he doesn't seem to know what to do with it yet.
jt2378 thanks for posting this! It reminded me to call and make DS's appointment today. We go the 24th.
Did/will any of your LO's get shots at this appointment? I read on our pedi's website that they give the polio vaccine at 9mo, but elsewhere I've read no more shots until 1 year.
Weird. I just looked at our paperwork from previous appointments, and it shows the Polio vaccine at 2 and 4 months, but not 6. I thought CDC recommendations were to give the series at 2, 4, and 6 months. I guess I'll have to ask the pedi why they give the third dose at 9mo instead when we go.
She doesn't seem very BF friendly. Mine isn't until next Friday, and I really want to ask her about food. But she pretty much says one thing and I turn around and do the completely opposite. She was very aggressive with starting with purees and meh. I have pics of him eating bits of steak lol.

@beckaroo,your guy's a little thing, isn't he?
I went crazy with the love tits because I'm excited about this bebes growing! My ped (love her) is out on maternity leave right now. So, our "9 month" check up won't be until July when L is just a few days shy of 10 months.

Oh- and the sippy cup? DD cannot figure that shit out for the life of her. We have a sippy with a spout and a straw cup. I don't think she's gotten more than 5 ounces total over the last 3 months. I've resorted to feeding her by dropping water right into her mouth from a straw (where i stop the end with my finger, and then release it to let it fall into her mouth, if that makes sense?)

Us too with the sippy and straw and I'm also doing the straw trick like you!

The 9 month was nice for us because it wasn't the full series of shots but we did have to have 1 it was the 3rd dose of Hep B. They also did a prick finger test to check her iron levels and for lead...She took it all like a champ!
@beckaroo are you going to a lab to have blood drawn? When DS got bloodwork for his allergies, he got stuck 3 times (the phlebotomist at the pedi missed once because DS moved, and the second time she hit the vein but it just wouldn't flow). The first two were awful because she had me hold him down on the table and he screamed. For the third (successful) stick, I had to take him to the lab. The phlebotomist there was awesome. I sat in a chair and held him in my lap, and she showed me how to hold him to keep his other arm out of the way. She was super nice and talked and distracted him the whole time-he didn't even notice when she stuck the needle in, and even smiled at her while she was filling the vials. They told me that for a young baby, restraining them is what makes them cry, not the needle itself. So maybe ask if you can hold him sitting rather than pinning him down on a table?
