More potty training

Now that I'm off for the summer, my number one goal is to get Robin potty trained. I'm hoping it won't be too painful...he has all the signs of readiness but can super stubborn.

We're going on vacation, leaving on June 26th for a week. That gives me two weeks starting tomorrow between now and vacation. If it were you, would you start potty training before vacation or do two more weeks of diapers? Part of me feels like I want to get started ASAP and another part of me wonders if I want to deal with potty things while we're on vacation. Two weeks in to it, how many accidents were you still dealing with a day?

I feel like Benjamin took awhile before I was confident he wouldn't have an accident. (Like a couple months) Especially if you are going to be in an unfamiliar setting, it might be more tricky.

I didn't do some of the methods others did on here (like the 3 day potty training and stuff) so it was probably about 2 months before I really felt confident in my DS being potty trained. I slowly took diapers away for different things (first at home, then short trips out, then familiar people's houses, then longer trips out, then daycare, then nap, then bedtime, lol). It was a longer process but I can count on one hand he numbers of accidents he had. He did well with the pull-ups sometimes and underwear others, and once he went a week or so with a dry pull-up for whatever the next place I was working on, I switched to underwear.

I'm still not totally confident and Kayleigh has been PT'd for a year. Honestly, she was at her best the first month or so. It was when she started to get lazy that she ended up having more and more accidents.

I would wait until after vacation. I wouldn't want to deal with the stress of potty training on vacation.

I would wait. 2 weeks hey can still be having accidents of they aren't thinking about it and if you're on vacation, I'm guessing you won't just be sitting around in a room all day. I would want to enjoy my time and not worry about if he has to pee.

You could a always start and if he isn't catching on hold off. When G decided he was done with diapers he was done. We had maybe 5 pee accidents in months. Now poop was another story but I wasn't going to keep him in diapers for poop.

I really like the sound of this method and I'm glad to hear it worked for you. I've been having a hard time wrapping my head around how I was going to potty train and still get anything done. I think this would work well for us, plus I could start now and keep it going on vacation without worrying about being diaper free in restaurants and long car rides. Thanks for sharing!

We are in the same position as you. My goal for the summer is to potty train and we are leaving for a week long vacation on June 28th. We are going to wait because I do not want to deal with a just potty trained kid on vacation. It will just make for a less stressful vacation for us if he is just in diapers still. We are going to start right when we get home.

Honestly I'd wait. Riley did really well and stopped having accidents after about 3 days, but we still put diapers on for car rides over an hour and she still has random accidents when she isn't paying attention. I guess I just feel like vacation is enough of a disruption to their lives right now that I wouldn't want to throw potty training in the mix too. GL whenever you start!

We did really slowly as well. The first day it was kinda on a whim that we stripped him down. We went naked at home a few days. Then home with shorts a few days. He had a few accidents when he was wearing underware so we just did loose shorts. Then pull ups when we did quick errands. And my best advise is have a little potty in the car! Its saved us so many times!!!

We are still having accidents at daycare...but he did great this weekend with no accidents out and about. I think at daycare he gets super caught up in what he is doing and the teachers have a harder time keeping track of when he last went since they are obviously watching lots of kids, not just him.

I guess for me it would depend on what the trip was. I would consider starting working on it, but then put him in pull ups for the plan ride for example. I am seriously considering putting Henry in pull ups for the plane ride for our trip, and that isn't until August!

We are another slowly worked on it household fyi.

I'm probably the odd man out and I'd start today. To me it's like a bandaid, just need to take the initial step and then rip it off. Starting today versus when you get back shouldn't be that difficult. I would personally like to not have to deal with diapers on vacation. I would just buy pull ups and use those. When we first started we went to underwear immediately and used pull ups for naps and bedtime. Good Luck, I bet he'll surprise you and do great!

What kinda vacation are we talking here? A week at gram's, I would start now. Trip to Disney? Diapers, baby.

Vacation is hard.  We started with potty training after Christmas and we went to Costa Rica in early February.  She was doing well with her potty training but she wasn't perfect.  Well, she peed all over the couch within half an hour of arriving at our condo rental.  I didn't want to be cleaning up and doing laundry my whole vacation, so I just used pull-ups.  It was a set-back, but it is hard when their routine is thrown off - especially if using the potty is something new to them.

Also, we weren't able to bring the little potty with us because we were flying and she didn't want to use the big toilet at that point.  So that made it difficult.

It depends on your goals for potty training - if you want to go hard core cold turkey, then wait until you get back for sure. If you want a more gradual approach, then there's no reason you can't start now, to let him used to the idea of using the potty, but still wearing pull ups.

With Ingrid, she was in undies at daycare (except for naps) for almost a year, but we still used pull ups at home for a long time because we are so busy on the weekends that we spend a lot of time in the car going to various places. If we spent more time at home, we would have just gone undies all the time sooner than we did, but I was not interested in cleaning the car seat every weekend.

Even when in pull-ups, we encouraged Ingrid to use the potty, not her pull-ups, and would ask her periodically if she needed to potty. She got to the point where she would tell us that she was a big girl and didn't want to wear a pull-up. It worked for us to kind of spread it out that way, but we probably would have been done sooner if we had gone diaper free from the start. Just depends on what your hope is for the time-frame.

Thanks for all the advice! Our vacation is at a house on Martha's Vineyard, so a long car ride (7-8 hours) but then a house and going out to walk aeolian towns and beaches and stuff.

I decided to just go for it, figuring worst case scenario I'll end up putting him back in diapers for a week. So far it's been pretty good--2 accidents today, but we went grocery shopping in just undies successfully. We'll see how it goes!
