I'm new and I guess this is technically my intro post (Hi everyone!) but I had to share. I just started reading Greg Iles mysteries. He is very similar to John Grisham The main character is Penn Cage, a southern prosecuter turned novelist, who's wife dies of cancer and he moves back to his home town of Mississippi with his daughter. He is a bleeding heart in the middle of the confederate south and the bulk of his novels focus on civil rights issues. I have heard the 4th book Natchez Burning is the best, but I'm only on the 2nd. They are amazing. Good writing, interesting stories, and current (this one was written in 2012). It's like John Grisham meets James Patterson's Alex Cross series.
ETA - I was incorrect about the date of the Greg Iles series. It's a little older than I would have thought - early 2000's but still reads very current.
I also liked Reconstructing Amelia, which is a mystery. Girl on the Train was ok. Defending Jacob is another good one - reminded me a lot of Gone Girl even more than Girl on the Train did.

Old school but if you're into classics "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White" by Wilkie Collins are definitely worth reading. Fair warning though, you won't want them to end
