MH and I are getting licensed to be foster parents and ultimately hope to adopt from foster care (ages 0-5). We don't have any biological children so we don't have any baby or little kid things, besides a few odds and ends that we've picked up at garage sales or from family/friends. We're expecting to be licensed in the next month or two, and our caseworker thinks we'll get our first placement(s) shortly after that.
We have been talking about whether or not we should put together a baby/child registry, but aren't really sure how to proceed. I don't know if anyone is going to want to throw us a baby shower, and I'm obviously not going to ask people to throw us one. Also, our age range is rather large (0-5), and we would need very different things for a baby than we would need for a 5-year-old, so it's hard to know what to buy/register for. And we're okay with initially fostering (so we might not adopt directly), so I don't know if that would make a difference for people getting us gifts.
Overall, this just feels like a touchy subject for me as a future adoptive parent. I don't want to sound greedy and I'm not going to demand that people get us presents, but I know that if I was having a biological child, this wouldn't be an issue and our church friends and family would already have planned and organized a shower. I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to put together a registry, in case people ask us about what we need, but I feel like we're going to end up buying most things ourselves.
What did you do when you were preparing to foster/adopt? Did you have a baby registry? Did friends/family throw you a shower?
On a related note, what are some baby/kid things that we need to have on hand before our first placement, and what are things we can buy during that first week of having the child/children with us?
