Hello! After 32 cycles, and 1CP, our last ditch effort IUI #4 worked! On Monday we had our first ultrasound and saw two babies! We were only able to see Baby A's heartbeat clearly because Baby B was too close to the blood vessels. We go back 6/26 for another ultrasound to make sure there are two heartbeats. I was going to wait until then to intro, but I have a question.
We had just traded in our bigger car for a prius in order to save up for IVF when we started this cycle. We haven't even made our first payment yet. The problem: it's a prius, and we have a 3 year old. I've done quite a bit of research, and it's possible to fit 3 car seats across in the back if we get the right combination of seats. We can fit a DSNG in the trunk, or a side by side. We have a rooftop carrier for traveling.
Am I crazy for wanting to keep the prius? I'm not against aminivan or anything (which is what we would get instead) but I love our car. We save SO much money on gas, it has all the options we wanted, and I find it easier to drive than something bigger. I'm just worried about the logistics with two infants and a toddler. DH wants to make a decision before our first payment is due at the end of those month, so I thought I would see what other multiples parents think.
No useful advice, but welcome. If it weren't for the time sensitivity of deciding on the prius, I might just wait and see how it works and have a backup plan that you can work on if it is too much less than ideal.
I don't have any advice myself, but just wanted to say congrats! Sounds like you've done your research but you also don't want to be like sardines in the Prius so hopefully someone with experience will chime in!

Congrats and welcome! I recognize you from lots of time creepily lurking on Baby Names.
No advice really other than it sounds like you love the Prius - since it is technically possible to fit all of them, you could always try it at least while the twins are still in infant seats, and then trade in down the road if it's really not working. I've owned one in the past and I agree they're roomier than they look! Good luck whatever you decide
ETA: reading fail, saw your H wants to decide now. Since you still have your whole pregnancy to go, can he be convinced to wait and see?

I doubt it. He doesn't want to waste the money paying on the prius if we're not going to keep it.

Ah ok. I was thinking you'd trade it in to a dealership for the minivan if needed, it shouldn't lose too much value in that time. But you're right, it is also a gamble. Good luck!
Welcome. I am expecting triplets and believe it or not my DH drives a Prius. We already have our three car seats and they do not all fit in the back of the Prius. I love that car and had planned on using it as the family car and DH using my Pontiac Grand Prix for his work vehicle but it doesn't look like that will work. Sorry I do not have better news for you. But congrats on the babies and g/l at your next u/s!

Thanks! It looks like the trick is to get specific seats that are more narrow, but I think we'll have to experiment to be sure.
Our backup car is an accord. We have two dionos and a snug ride installed three across for my twins + 1. I had to cart the kids around in it for a week while the minivan was getting repaired. It was tight but doable. The most annoying part to me about the set up was the infant seat was in the center so it was a pita to get the baby in and out. I may feel less annoyed about the situation if the infant seats were outboard and the toddler say in the middle.
Not sure if this response was helpful but congrats and good luck on making your decision. Welcome to the board.

Very helpful, thank you! This gets me thinking about placement of the seats. I'm more worried about annoyance than anything.

Is there any way you can get some seats into it and actually see what it would be like? You can still use whatever seats you end up buying in a bigger car if you end up not liking the setup so it wouldn't be a waste.
Something else to think about is how much will your toddler mess with the babies if he sat in the middle vs having him outboard and only within reach of one baby.

We have a britax marathon and a chicco keyfit right now. I was thinking try those in different positions and mark where they are with tape or something just to get an idea. We would be switching DD from the marathon to a radian, so if it's almost doable with the marathon, I think it definitely would be with the radian. Ideally I would like to get DD on the driver side since she is FF and DH would be able to have the driver seat at a more comfortable position when he's in the car, but I think I'll try putting the infant seat in the middle for a trial run to see how much it sucks trying to put it in so far.

If DD is already FF have you considered getting a harness to booster instead of the diono? I got harmony defender 360s for grandmas car. They are the same width as the dionos but can go from harness to seat belt positioner to low back booster. Plus half the cost. Getting the infant seat out of the center position isn't too bad if you only have to lift it over another base. you won't have to maneuver the bucket around the side/back of the Car seat next to it.

We're planning on getting the one that is convertible to booster, so it sounds like what you're describing. I'll look up the harmony as well though, because saving money would be awesome.
Girl, get rid of the Prius and save your sanity. IMO it's one thing to deal with a smaller, more compact car as a second vehicle or for once in a while trips. But if this will be your daily vehicle for years, you will lose your mind. It sounds like you will just barely have enough room for everyone and a stroller, but what about when you go grocery shopping or go anywhere where you will need more space? Also think about as the kids get older and start messing with each other in the car. Another thing to think about is logistics of putting the kids in the car when they move to convertible seats, and keeping them near you and not running off.
I traded my Jeep in for a minivan a few months ago and it's amazing. My twins will be here in a couple weeks, but even just with DS alone (who is 2) it is so nice for room. I have DS in the 2nd row captains seat, and the other one is stowed so it's just a big opening on the other side. The infant seats are installed in the back row. I can open the door and get everyone in that open side, then close it behind me while I snap them all in so they aren't running around. It's come in handy already in the rain and for changing DS.
I dreaded getting a minivan but I am so in love with it. I understand that most of the reasons I'm giving are just perks for convenience and not necessities, but you're about to have twins and 3 kids total. You re going to want all the convenience and comfort you can get.
Weird, I can't write under the quote, but anyways... I posted these links earlier this week:
when you start thinking about carseats and your vehicle, I found this website to be helpful and a good starting point: thecarseatlady.com/fitting3across/ And with this one, you can look up your car and the carseats that will fit: www.thecarcrashdetective.com/3-across-car-seat-guide-html/
I'm not anti-minivan by any means, but I'm just not a large car kind of driver. We have a Mazda3 hatchback and a Toyota RAV4, and its looking like the Mazda will be our primary kid car. I didn't see if you mentioned where you live- if you're in a city, I can see a minivan being really inconvenient.
But regarding figuring out what will fit: Go to the store, check out their return policies (they won't all let you do this), and buy the car seats you think will fit. Try fitting them in, throw a 10lb weight, sack of flour, or gallon of milk in the infant seats and see how you feel about putting them in and out. Put the bases in, put your current car seat in and ask LO to crawl into it and see if that is going to work. Then return the seats. I've heard Babies R Us will let you fit test their floor models as well...
I don't have much advice on the car situation. The only time we really need a lot of space is when we road trip to my ILs and need pack n plays, etc. otherwise, we could easily get away w a smaller car (we have a mid-size SUV as the primary baby-mover).
schmella, we were planning on using my mazda3 sedan as the primary car until we got the minivan. I loved it! It is surprisingly roomy inside. I was so sad when we traded it in for the accord.

[ The harmony is a ff only seat but it has higher harness limits than the diono (rf and ff) and I think the reviews rate it a better booster. I want the kids harnessed as long as possible and we were done rf at this point so didn't need that functionality of f the diono.
Get rid of the Prius. Aside from car seats, think about trunk space, strollers, groceries, any kind of traveling. I only have my twins. We went from a focus to a Ford Taurus . One for the comfort of seating positions the infant seats did not fit in the focus properly for DH to drive. Plus it only fit the stroller. We are so much happier now with our Taurus. We can fit 3 across if needed. If you plan on keeping your Prius. Don't forget to read the manual for the best seating positions for three across. I can also suggest. Car seats for the littles on FB the techs there are very knowledgeable about any questions on what car seats for three across situations work best on all sorts of cars. beat of luck!

Thanks everyone for your replies! It turns though, that I actually won't be joining this board. My ultrasound today sadly showed that Baby B stopped growing at 6w5d. Thankfully, Baby A is doing well.
Congrats! I'm an suv fan so my opinion will be VERY biased. It's gonna be tight in that Prius but there are worse things in life and it won't be impossible. I'd say if it's not too late to take it back then do it, otherwise just give it a shot fitting all 3 in there.
Eta: just saw the update. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss!!!
